BOSTON, Mass. (4) — The
Massachusetts State Council of
Churches is launching an 18-
month campaign “to help stop
the gambling mania," it was an-
nounced by Dr. Myron W. Fow-
ell, head of the council’s depart-
ment of social relations.
Aa a result of recent state
crime commisison investigations
showing extensive gambling
throughout the state, he said, the
council's 1,800 member churches
will join in the effort to wipe
out organized gambling. He said
an educational program, through
county and community commit-

fer several year* and is probably
the new planters best source of
seed for plantings to be made
thia fall.
Most vetch fields observed
over the District show very lit-
tie promise of a seed harvest.
Data are produding less bushels
per acre than anticipated. Grow-
er* of crimson, vetch, and oats
should keep in mind that due to
weather conditions there will be
a shortage of locally grown seed
and during a shortage there
should be a good demand next
fall. The small grower will need
seed next fall and even though
his production might not be too
high he can pay $7.00 to *10.00
per acre to get his seed harvest-<
ed and get much cheaper seed
than he can buy next fall.
We are fortunate to have
plenty of moisture now and pas-
ture grasses are making excellent
growth. Weeds and bushes are
also making good growth on
pastures. Both weeds and grasses
can do well under present con-
ditions but in all probability to
July, August, and September
competition for moisture will be-
come strong. When competition
becomes strong the weeds and
bushes will always win out This
moisture can be conserved for
the more desirable pasture plants
by mowing now to get rid of
brush and weeds.
Howard Leftwich is mowing
weeds and sprouts from pasture
land on his farm, five miles
north of Mt. Pleasant This mow-
ing will save moisture and also
plant food for his bermuda sod
that would otherwise be used to
produce a growth on his pasture
that would be of no value as
grazing.
