The Alvin Raiders opened the
Bay Area Football League season
by hosting the NASA Bay Falcons,
Aug. 21 at Pearson Park.
In the first game of the age 4-6-
year old flag football campaign, the
Raiders played a dominating con-
test Oil both sides of the ball in col-
lecting a convincing 25-12 triumph.
Quarterback Mitchell Davidson
threw for as many yards as he ran,
scoring a touchdown and tailback
Christian Leaden reached the end
zone three more times.

Lady Ranger hitting errors spelled a 5-0 beginning,
while Smith coupled a kill and net rejection to increase
the margin to 11-1.
However, Clements finally responded with a 7-0 run
and although two Morgan Meyer floor blasts helped
regain the momentum at 13-8 and pave the way for the
first game triumph, the match went back and forth the

areas we need to work on to beat
the other strong teams,” head
coach Katy Garza said.
Getting past Clements (who
went to the state tournament two
years ago) proved no easier than
the rugged Duncanville bracket,
which Alvin emerged from with an
impressive 5-1 mark.

Lady Jacket juniors Tausha Kelly and Caley Smith both go high above the net to block a St. Agnes shot
during Tuesday night's tri-match at Gym III. Alvin improved to 9-1 for the season with the victory.
The bulge grew to 10-5, before the Lady Js* regained
steam with Goodson’s ace and Clements’ errors off
both the 5-10 senior and Melissa Bullion’s services
chipping the deficit to two. Smith’s serve then resulted
in two Goodson kills, Rachel Scott’s solo block and
three straight hitting miscues to put Alvin at match
point. However, the Lady Rangers remained pesky and
eventually retied the issue at 14, until a hitting error on
Shelly Wilson’s serve and Meyer’s kill finally closed it
out.
Goodson led the Lady Jackets in the kill department
with 11, while Meyer was next at six and Smith deliv-
ered five kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Scott also
rejected three shots at the net.
Against St. Agnes. Alvin mixed in its reserves with
the starters and dusted off the Tigers quickly in straight
sets. Junior Dena Turner hammered a pair of aces to
spark a 5-0 start and the Lady Jackets never looked
back, increasing their lead as much as 11.
The Tigers made things tight for a brief moment at 6-
5 during the second game, but later committed four
consecutive errors with Wilson serving to seal the deal.
Eight Lady Jackets registered kills in the match with
Goodson’s six followed by Meyer with four, Smith and
Julie Burkhalter with three apiece and Sarah Die,
Tausha Kelly, Turner and Wilson with one each.
Alvin next hosts Elkins, Friday at 6:30 p.m. and then
welcomes several former Lady Jackets back for the
annual Alumni match at 7:30.
AHS VOLLEY NUTES - As reported in last
Wednesday’s Advertiser, Goodson and Smith each
received all-tourney accolades for their performances
at Duncanville.
