The Sacramento River Delta embraces vast rice fields, walnut
trees, some sheep and cattle, hilltop farms of graceful windmills
— and eventually the symm etrical vineyards which surround
Lodi, Calif.
KGO News Director John McConnell calls out landmarks as we
pass -- all the while talking into his portable telephone, direct-
ing what I was soon to learn was a cadre of converging micro-
phones and cameras.
"Over there is Rio Vista where hapless Humphrey the whale
swam too far inland and got stranded, " he points out.
• While anticipating my upcoming adventure, I am also feeling
an empathetic kinship with the adventuresome whale who had
a feeling he wanted to go and still had a feeling he wanted to
stay.
We land at Lodi airport.
Like most world champions, Bill Dause is a gentle man.
Because I have a speaking engagem ent back in San Francisco
this evening, the pre-flight procedure must necessarily be
telescoped. What would normally be hours of preparation must
be condensed into minutes.
Besides, Angel, trying to keep her mind off what her husband
is up to, has finished praying and now, to occupy herself, has
gone shopping. So every minute we delay is becoming more
expensive back at Saks department store.
Bill dutifully explains the hazards, then recites a count-down
sequence of instructions:
We will kneel at the open door of the plane and roll out
together
in my initial position, both hands are to be clasped across my
chest. Once we fall clear of the plane, with arms extended,
back arched and knees bent, I will be able to maneuver left
and right and vary the speed of our free-fall.
As patient, meticulous Bill guides me into jumpsuit and
harness and helmet I am noticing others are suiting up — some
of these with cameras on their helmets and microphones taped
to their shoulder straps.
Any possibility of keeping this boyish adventure an in-house
secret is now very unlikely.
The aging Beech 18 is waiting.
With a wave intended to appear brave I head for the growling
plane.
Once inside, the three of us who will jump separately are seated
on the bare floor, adjusting the pack chutes, snuggling the harness,
fitting goggles which are soon to shelter our eyes from winds
that are hurricane velocity times two.
One final time Bill Dause is talking me through the litany of
instruction:
Kneel at the open door of the plane, arms crossed at the chest,
somersault out -- then head back, legs up, back arched and
arms extended we will maneuver.
When the free-fall portion of the flight -- from 12, 500 feet to
5, 000 feet -- has been completed, I will open the chute, a
wide, flat, rectangular beautiful canopy which traps air in
tunnels of nylon.
During the ensuing five minutes Bill will instruct me in how
to flare out and land softly. We will have time to practice that
maneuver at least twice before the approach.
Finally, we will turn into the wind, and at his signal I will
haul down on both toggle handles to flare out, stall and touch
down.
Somebody inside the plane is taking pictures. I try to smile
a smile of confidence. It ain’t!
