Alvin High School placed a total

24-5A Boys’ Basketball Teams.
Senior post Chris Hairfield
received a first-team berth, while
junior Manin Garza and senior
Mike Singletary were each named
to the second squad and senior
Trent Olivier gained a third-team
spot.
The 6-5 Hairfield led the
Yellowjackets in both scoring with
13.1 points per game and total
rebounds at 152. Garza pumped in
11.1 points a game during the 1999-
2000 campaign and paced the AHS
varsity hoop boys in three-pointers
with 64 treys.
Singletary dished out 91 assists
and swiped 62 passes to lead Alvin
in both departments along with
averaging 7.1 points. Olivier ranked
second on the team with 127 boards
and was fourth in assists with 28.
Alvin went 6-8 in district and was
12-17 overall.

Charlie Ackley launched a grand-
slam home run and Bryan Chaffin
also went deep with a two-run shot
to propel the Alvin High School
Varsity Baseball Boys to an over-
whelming 18-5 five-inning run-
ruled decision in the first round of
the Pasadena Tournament on
Thursday.
The Yellowjackets (3-1) jumped
out to an 8-0 first-inning advantage
and never looked back, adding a
pair of tallies during the fourth and
putting another eight-spot on the
board in the fifth.
Ackley drove in five runs overall
with a 2-for-4 performance, while
Brandon Watts pumped out three
hits in four plate trips with two
RBIs.
Winning pitcher Cassidy Coffman
went the distance for Alvin, allow-
ing five hits, while striking out four
and not allowing a walk or a earned
run.
Coffman joined Michael Gultz in
the two-hit department as well and
also getting hits were Chaffin,
Adam Bentley, Josh Ackley, Justin
Davis, Justin Mick and Justin
Minton.
Remaining tourney results will be
included in Wednesday’s Alvin
Advertiser.
After spending the first two weeks
playing only road games, the
Jackets finally receive a chance to
be the host as North Shore comes to
Nolan Ryan Field for a 4 p.m.
Tuesday afternoon affair.
Alvin then hosts its annual varsity
baseball tourney, March 9-11, wel-
coming Fort Bend Austin, South
Houston, Pasadena, Dulles, Mayde
Creek, Friendswood and Lamar
Consolidated.
