talking with those whom they’ll be vis
iting, discussing such issues as safety
(is the home childproof?) and con
cerns-about valuable and breakable
objects in the home. The hosts may
have their own holiday traditions, so
children should be told what to expect,
she added.
As families gather for the holidays,
young children may be overwhelmed
by seeing so many relatives, some of
whom they might meet for the first
time. Dr. Jackon recommends taking
the Child into another room, giving
him or her the opportunity to get awy
for a while. However, she added, "At
the first sign a child is-misbehaving,
it's, time to leave.
Traveling with children during the
holidays can be stressful for parents,
and children can pick up on that stress.
Dr. Jackson said. When flying, she
recommends booking direct flights, if
possible, and bringing along toys that
will hold the child's interest.

Lent, the 40-day period” of last-
ing in preparation for Easter, has
been on the church calendar since
the first or second century. Early
Christians began a tradition of eat-
ing fish qn Wednesdays and
Fridays in memory of Christ’s
fasting for 40 days in the desert.
While Lent is supposed to he
about the soul. the season is .
famous for provoking culinary
. creativity. Challenged to spark up
her convent's Lenten diet, a
medieval French abbess invented
bouillabaisse; the now classic
seafood "stew" that incorporates
-numerous species of fish. The
abbess must have lived close to
the sea, but these days, thanks to
modern processing and transporta-
tion, we enjoy a tremendous-vari-
ety of seafood throughout the
year.
• If you, like the abbess, need
some inspiration to come up with
meatless Lenten meals, follow her
example and look to seafood.
Seafood'makes delicious Lenten
suppers a snap to prepare and a
healthy menu choice.
In fact, eating fish twice weekly
is a good idea year round, not just
during Lent. Every kind of
seafood contains some heart-
healthy omega-3 fatty acids, so
; you can enjoy a wide variety of
; -fish and shellfish
in addition to being a top nutri-
tional choice, seafood is perfect
! for today’s busy families. A com-
: pletc seafood dinner can be ready
1 in athalf hour or less and still have
1 the eye and taste appeal to spark
