He began working with steel when his father
made him a belt-buckle during his senior year
of high school. Watkins asked his father to
show him how to work the metal, and he began
making his own buckles. Years later, his work
progressed into rendering larger objects from
the metal.
While he may not refer to his work as art, it
sells like art. His armadillo piece sold to a
ranch house in south Texas for $3,000.
His Indian head dress carries a price tag of
$12,000.
Each piece also carries a story for Watkins.
When he decided he wanted to create a realis-
tic armadillo, he knew he needed to examine
one of the animals closely.
One night, when driving home from a base-
ball tournament, Watkins found an armadillo to

As art mediums go, it could be said that Alvin
resident Steve Watkins works in the hardest
there is — stainless steel.
The Alvin resident does not use art terms,
however, he calls where he does his work a
"shop" and not a “studio." Instead of sculpting.
.he pounds, grinds and etches his work.
“ The results are truly works of art, gleaming
and highly detailed objects. Pieces include a
life-size armadillo, a cowboy hat he calls
“Stainless Stetson,” and a slithering cobra
snake, all shaped in realistic detail in shining
stainless steel.
