The Christmas season is over and the tin-
sel and lights have been put away for an-
other year. Most of us will be glad to put the
firantic holiday schedule behind us and get
back to normal.
But one aspect of the holidays shouldn't
be packed away with the Christmas orna-
ments: the spirit of giving. When we are
caught up in the spirit of the season we are
more likely to be generous to those in need
of various kinds of help.
It's important to remember that the needs
don't disappear with the season. People
who are hungry or homeless in December
are usually in the same shape in January
and February. The difference is that the.
weather is colder and people have lost the
holiday glow of generosity.

1991 requires employers to have a
drug prevention program in place.
Since the Worker's Compensation
Commission has not yet finalized
rules which tell employers what to
teens and the wind chill below zero, it
doesn't take much imagination to sympa-
thize with anyone who doesn't have a warm
coat. The thought of a child walking to
school in the bitter cold with only a light
jacket should send all of us to our closets to
find last year's outgrown coat.
Coats of all sizes, for adults and children,
will be collected by "Coats for the Cold" and
distributed through the school nurse or the
Health Department. Last year over 100
coats were distributed at the schools, the
health department and the jail.
Drop-off points are the Corner Drug in
Llano and the Kingsland Pharmacy in ′
Kingsland.
Coats should be mended and cleaned be-
fore they are dropped off.
Let's make sure that the spirit of giving
that was so real in Llano County during the
Christmas season doesn't disappear with

Senior military officials have repeatedly
said for the past several weeks that U.S.
military forces ashore would not be ready
for an all-out war by the Jan. 15th deadline.
They have said that the United States will
not be ready for war until about mid-Febru-
ary because the full deployment of troops
and equipment assigned to the gulf region
will not be in place until then.

I am only one member of the American
public, however, I believe the United States
should NOT go to war against Iraq, I believe
the loss of one American is one too many, I
believe the American public does not sup-
port a war in the Middle East, I believe the
American public is concerned about inno-
cent men, women and children killed or
maimed in a senseless war - no matter what
their nationality.
We are in a no-win situation and our
President and his advisors are wrong in as-
suming they have wholehearted support for
this war - which would be a terrible tragedy
for all of mankind.

President Bush has decided the United
States should move quickly to launch a
massive, all-out military attack on Iraqi
forces if Iraq falls to withdraw from Kuwait
by the United Nations deadline of January
15.
According to news releases late last week
neither congressional nor public dissent
will have any bearing on pur President's
historic decision because he believes .
(according to the news stories) that delaying
an attack much beyond the deadline would
• increase U.S. casualties.
Government officials said President Bush
realized that a war with the Iraqui million- -
man army "could last at least a month and
probably result in tens of. thousands of
Iraqui casualties and cost thousands of
American lives."
But, they said, the President and his aides
4 believe that the American public would
support the war as long as the United States 1
scored a decisive victory and the number of
American casualties was "relatively" low.
The officials said that Pres. Bush assumes
I that the American public would be mainly
concerned about the number of U.S. casual-
ties, not the "tens of thousands of Iraquis -
including women and children - who stand
to die or be maimed in a massive air as-
sault."

Beware of the Greenhouse

During the last decade, scientists,
journalists, and public officials have
done their best to convince us that
our planet is rapidly warming.
