ELECTRICAL
SAFETY
MONTH!
Essie Provence. 71. of Kings-
land died at her home on May
We invite you and your
family to learn all about
electrical safety. And for
starters, we offer a few home
safety tips:
Dale Seabaugh
and the Express
• Disconnect or turn off
power whenever work is
being done on
anything that uses
electricity.
There’s more, of course, to
add to your electrical safety
checklist. It's yours for the
asking. Just give us a call;
well be glad to help. In our
book, every month is the
time to observe electrical
safety.
• Use fire extinguishers or
common baking soda if an
. electrical fire occurs.
• Don’t
insert metal
objects into an
electrical outlet or
appliance.

As the end of school ap-
proaches, many employed pat-
ents face decisions about sum-
mer child care arrangements.
When is a child old enough to
stay at home alone? The deci
sion to forgo the cost of a
babysitter or other paid day
care should be taken only after
much careful thought.
Rather than deciding that a
child is "old enough" to stay
alone at home, consider the
child's maturity in the areas of
reasoning and behaving re-
sponsibly. Does your child usu-
ally obey your instructions? is
he or she mature enough to un-
derstand the consequences that
might result from certain ac-
tions (such as playing with
matches, letting a stranger ip
the house, etc.)? Is the child
able to follow simple written
instructions?
Another factor to consider is
the availability of someone in
the neighborhood that could be
counted on to go to the child’s
aid in a real emergency. In
many neighborhoods, there are
no adults at home during the
day. Would you be able to leave
your place of work to go to the
child’s rescue?
The child's own feelings about
being left alone during the day
should be taken into account, is
the child afraid to stay alone?
Some children are able to en.
tertain themselves by reading,
watching television, playing in-
door games, etc. Others are not
happy unless they are actively
involved with a lot of other chil-
dren. which can spell trouble in
self-care situations. 3
If the decision is made to
leave the child alone during the
summer, parents should spend
some, time setting, household
rules and training the child on
handling emergencies. Next
week's column will give tips
along those lines.
