poet, we especially want to see

"The board of the State Bar
decided to attack the problem
seriously, through forming this
committee," said Garner. "The
Legaldegook Awards are a way
to use humor in pointing out the
problem. But we've also drafted
a 10-point charter for plain le-
gal writing, which the board has
approved."

"I recommend NU-EAR hearing aids because I wear them. For the first
time in years I hear well in church, I don’t miss a word the minister
speaks, and.. Dale doesn’t have to holler at me anymore. If you, or a
loved one, suspects a hearing loss, you can trust NU-EAR.”

Say what?
The above passage, from a
1981 court case between the
Mississippi Bluff Motel, Inc. and
the County of Rock Island, will
be awarded the 1991 Rise-of-
the-Roman-Language Award at
the annual meeting of the State
Bar of Texas this month in
Houston. The award is one of
eight prize winning examples of
poor legal writing cited in the
Bar's first annual Legaldegook
Awards.
"This is part of a new initiative
to persuade lawyers. Judges, and
lawmakers to use ordinary En-
glish instead of that gummy
language called legaldegook,”
said Dallas attorney Bryan A.
Garner, who will present the
awards at the meeting's June 21
breakfast of bar leaders. Gar-
ner. chair of the Bar's recently-
formed Plain-Language Com-
mittee, said the committee's
goal is to bring attention to the
need for clarity in legal lingo.
* “We decided fo bestow awards
for conspicuously bad exam-
ples, to draw attention to some
of the horrific writing that mod-
ern lawyers perpetrate," said
Garner.
