On April 8, the Llano Commu-
nity Thrift Shop had their meeting
at the store. The meeting was called
to discuss the how and where quar-
terly money will be donated. It was
unanimous that the Llano Scholar-
ship Fund should be the receiver.
They wish to thank all the cus-
tomers and those who donated
goods for making this gift possible.
Slop by and. let them know about

Chancy, we couldn’t have done it

1999’s grand champion fiddler
was Ricky Turpin from New
Braunfels; he was last year’s grand
champion as well. Anthony Wilson
from Fort Worth came in second
place in the fiddle-off, and 10 year
old, Brook Wallace from Alvorado
came in third. The crowd really had
a treat with the young musicians;
they were fantastic; there’s lots of
talent out there.
Local fiddler, Bill Tuckness car-
ried on Bud’s tradition of playing a
couple of special tunes at the end of
the day. It was a day of good music
and good memories.

Quotes: Roger Cohen, NY times:
"There is nothing inevitable about
what is happening in the Balkans.
It has its causes. They lie not in
some faraway history, nor in some
genetic readiness to kill. The fact
remains that, through a decade of
Balkan violence, the one Western
act that demonstrably contributed to
peace was the concerted NATO
bombing of Serb positions in
Bosnia in August and September
1995.”

At the Chamber, we arc grateful
for every opportunity to get the
word out about Llano and our sur-
rounding area. I had a lot of fun
spreading the word last week at
travel shows at Lackland Air Force
Base and Randolph Field in San
Antonio. My chamber friends from
Kingsland, Marble Falls, and John-
son City were there as well. Llano
and the Hill Country arc a short
two hour drive away and such a
contrast from all of the hustle and
bustle of the city.
We had a grand lime al the Third
Annual Bud Olto Fiddle Contest, it
was a bittersweet kind of day, the
first contest without long time
friend. Bud Olio, who passed away
this past January. Our thanks to all
who participated and to all the folks
who worked so hard to make the
day a success.
Thank you to the American Le-
gion Post 370, the Evening Lions
Club, Faye and Eddie McDonald,

Llano and the Hill Country re-
ceived more good press recently
with an article entitled "Texas Hill
Country" in the April issue of Na-
tional Geographic Magazine with
its mention of Enchanted Rock, the
Llano River, and Packsaddle
Mountain. It’s a wonderful piece
written by John Graves with photos
by Vincent Musi. The early morn-
ing photo of sunlight breaking
through the clouds landing on the
pink granite of Enchanted Rock
captures the mystique of the rock.
And, we had international press
with a feature story, "The Sacred
Rock of Texas" in Spotlight maga-
zine. Spotlight circulates among
English speaking Germans in Ger-
many, Austria and Switzerland -
over 200,000 readers. The article is
about Enchanted Rock and includes
an interview with Ira Kennedy, lo-
cal expert on the rock, and local
historian. For those of you on the
Internet, you can check out the
article, and the rest of the special on

The Llano Noon Lions Club was
given a real treat when Lion Dan
Hoerster presented Scott Zesch who
gave a very interesting and
informative program on Yugoslavia
and her states. Zesch, a graduate of
Texas A&M and Harvard Law
School, had been to the Balkans
twice (1997 and 1998) to serve as a
monitor for elections. He indicated
that the Kosovo crisis in some
ways was a repeat of what started
happening in Bosnia seven years
ago. Background on Bosnia: before
the war, Bosnia had been the most
ethnically integrated of Yu-
goslavia’s six republics.
The three main ethnic groups -
Muslims, Serbs (orthodox Chris-
tian), and Croats (Catholics) - were
racially identical, all white Eastern
European Slavs. They all spoke the
same language, Serbo-Croatian.
They intermarried and lived in
mixed neighborhoods. The only
way the three groups could tell each
other apart was by their names.
Kosovo: "Probably nowhere in
Europe arc human rights as fla-
grantly and systemically violated as
they are here." (LP) Until recently
: it was an autonomous province;
; now part of the Republic of Serbia.
Kosovo has about two million
people, 90 percent of which arc
ethnic Albanians. Milosevic’s pol-
