Yeah well, let's see, one night I was supposed to stay at a place and there was
three inches of water on the ... on the land, so you had to ... you didn't want
water, you had to pile up a thatch to take care of that. So, I rode a jeep back two
or three miles, stopped there, and we started digging on a ... some work that was
already there. But we started to work there'd be a machine gun somewhere or
another start and we'd quit, it would quit. We started again, it would start, so
where the bullets were going, I have no idea, but we didn't hear the bullets, but
we heard the machine gun.
Uhm!
So we finally just quit. And I had a foxhole that night about half long and about
three inches deep.
(Laughter).
But they didn't shoot that night.
I'll bet you didn't! Uhm!
No, but ...
So, what was it like when you actually got home to see your parents again?
Not a great deal because I kept in contact with them.
Right.
And with other people. And I got home ... well, I got on a plane ... and on a
train in California and headed ... Dallas, Texas. And one of us was put on with
me was a small Mexican.
Really?
Uh, I got the biggest seat, and when we got ... after one night we had to change
seats, so we rode on that big C ... one day and one night, the next night, this

little Mexican says, "I can't ride in that big seat, blah, blah, blah, you take it." I
wondered how I was going to sleep on the floor in that train, but he was small
enough that he could just sleep anywhere.
Yeah.
So, he slept, and I had the good sleeping. And then we got back to Dallas, went
to Dallas, I guess on the (unintelligible), had ... oh, let's see, I don't know who
came aft ... to the train after me, was somebody took me up to Ambrose on a car
