From Attorney Frank J. Ford, at
Vega, comes the following letter to
the Messenger Editor: "Friend Dick :
I find the enclosed reminiscence in
Dallas News, which recalls some of
our old pioneer friends, especially
your fnther. Santanta was tried be-
fore our friend, Chas. Howard. then
district judge, with Shm Lanham as
district attorney. The jury assessed
the death penalty against him for his
raid in Jack. Parker and Wise conn-
ties; the higher court affirmed the
sentence. Judge Howard set the day
for him to hu hung, when Governor
Davis commuted his sentence, and he
wns sent to the penitentiary at Hunts
rille. Your father made among the
hardest. fights to keep the governor
from extending clemency. Finally
Santanta was parolled to the United
States government by Texas, and sent
o Fort Hill, where he died"
