About Her Son
He was a nice looking boy, fair,
. like his mother, with the same wide
blue eyes. Charlene gave his age
; as twenty-three, a year older than
Litha, but he was one of those boys
who would never look mature.
“He’s such a dear, good boy," she
said. "Never has given me the least

for you to know Justin. And, my
dear, he’s coming home!” Her pret-

guest. "His own fault, of course.
The Tannahill temper. Allowing it
i til ruin his whole life, blight his
happiness. But I do think age mel-
j lows everyone, don’t you, Leitha?
I do think Uncle Mason is mellow-
big. I believe that if he could live
his life over, he would not be so
harsh, so unrelenting. Maybe he
hopes to atone yet, before, he ‘dies.”
"I am sure Mr. Tannahill will live
a great many years,” Leitha said
firmly. She did not like this assump-
. । tion that the old gentleman’s days
! were numbered. Nor did she care
| to listen to any gossip about Ma-
1 son Tannahill, the bitter quarrel with
his only child, the sad death of his
wife.
So now she added, deliberately, "I
customs as if to impress the new-
comer.
“How do you think you are going
to like Tannahill?" she asked, hav-
ing said that if Leitha did not mind,
she would have a little coffee, any-
way.
Leitha said she thought she’d like
Tannahill very much. That was the
polite response, surely.
"It’s a wonderful place, really.”
The other woman’s eyes were filled
with pride. “It burned down once,
you know, when Sherman passed
this way. Uncle Mason had it re-
built exactly like the original house;

Leitha said that she was inclined
to agree with Mrs. Upfield. Pri-
vately she thought she could also
understand Tanis Geller’s reasons;
the house could be more cheerful.
“Please don’t call me Mrs. Up-
field," that lady said now in her
little-girl, pleading tone. Her eyes
were beseeching again. “I would

Leitha thought perhaps she had
wanted to ask the doctor about her
uncle’s condition. She explained that
she had been in Mrs. Upfield’s room
for at lest a half-hour and that, as
far as. she knew, the doctor had left
as long before as that.
"So Charlene has been making up
to you already!” Tanis’ tone was
as cynical as the one Andres often
used. There was an amused little
smile on her lips. She shrugged
"Leave it to Charlene,” she said, and
then, without so much as an “ex-
cuse me,” she went on her way

that sprang to her lips. Not only had

know. And now my son is in the
Marines."
Leitha had not known there was a
son, perhaps another relative hop-
ing to inherit part of Tannahill.
She brushed that thought aside as
an ugly one, since Charlene Upfield
did not impress her as that sort of
person.
"I’ll be glad to call you Charlene,”
she said, "if you will call me by my
first name." She could break her
rule with this friendly little crea-
ture.
“You have such a pretty name,”
Charlene responded. “An unusual
one. Indeed, I neversheard it be-
for— from an outsider, I mean. You
see, it was the name of one of the
Tannahills—Uncle Mason’s mother,
as a matter of fact.”
Leitha murmured something, not
divulging that she bad already been
given that information.

personal topic. Y
Leitha was reviewing some of
these things in her mind as she
dined in old Mr. Tannahill's im-
mense room. She was sitting at
a small table placed before the win-
dows. Her patient was in bed,
propped against his many pillows.
Union, the old colored valet, hov-
ered about.
Mason Tannahill called out sud-
denly in bis gruff voice, now re-
stored tn its usual strength, "See

are we to become better acquainted
with you so far away that I have
to shout’ How would it be to'have

Leith said that would be fine
She did not need Union's help: she
could move the light table without
any assistance. In fact, she added,
having done this, she thought they
cou'd get along very nicelv without
Union. Maybe there were other
matters he could he attending to.
“An excellent idea." Mr. Tanna-
hill agreed. “Union fusses over me
as if I were a baby. Be off with
you!” he ordered in his fiercest tone
to the bent old man But there
was a twinkle in his eye, betraving
his fondness for the servant And
it was clear that he was worshipped
by the old colored man.

scarcely remember my mother. She
died when I was such a little girl.
My father always called her John-

She felt the sting of tears behind
her eyes Loneliness welled over her.
Talking about her dad always made
Leitha feel very much alone.
On her way to her own rooms,
Leitha met Tanis, who stopped her
to ask abruptly if Dr. Gates had left.
“I believe the doctor has been
gone for some time, ” Leitha re-
plied.
“Are you sure?" Tanis' tone was
sharp.
Leitha Misses
Her Locket
Leitha sighed; she did not intend
to become entangled in any personal
relationships in his mixed house-
hold. Perhaps she had made a mis-
take in being so friendly with Mrs.
Upfield, in riding with Andres. She
would be more careful from now on.
And she would also be careful, she
resolved, with Justin Upfield, when
tbat young man arrived. For if
would be very easy for the Tanna-
hills to think that Leitha would en-
courage a boy like the young marine
for her own purposes.
If they only knew how I really
feel, she thought, with some con-
tempt. That! wouldn't trade places
with any of them!
In her room, she opened the top
drawer of the chest to take out her
box of writing materials. Instead,
she gave a low exclamation. Fort
the contents of the drawer had been
disturbed. The box had been pushed
farther back, several small objects
-moved--------------
Slipping her hand under the pile
of handkerchiefs, Leitha found that
the locket she had put there was
gone! She yanked the drawer out,
dumping everything -onto the bed.
The locket was not there.
She remembered how Foswick
had entered, so silently, just as she
was putting the locket away. Could
the maid have taken it, out of curi-
osity, intending to replace it later?
But that did not seem an adequate
explanation. And the maid had an

Tanis Geller had also come down

Leitha'e quarters. But it was fool-

Leitha put the things back into the
drawer and replaced it. She was
perplexed rather than angry. And..
of course, she felt badly about it,
too. If it had not contained her
