Smithville losing 61
SP Railroad jobs
As expected, Smithville will
be losing 61 jobs due to the
merger of Union Pacific and
Southern Pacific Railroads.
Smithville has long been a big
railroad town where many
Southern Pacific employees re-
sided.
Many of the SP employees liv-
ing at Smithville will be trans-
ferred to other locations.
In its merger proposal. Union
Pacific has promised $650 mil-
lion in benefits to shipper and
the company.

Donations needed
for Senior Parties
The Senior Parties at Faith
Lutheran Church in McDade
have been the highlight of
many nursing home patients
for the past few years. They are
from Hennesey Nursing Home
in Giddings, Golden Years
Nursing Home in Elgin, and
Silver Pines in Bastrop.
Volunteers making these par-
ties possible are from McDade
and surrounding areas. They
donate their time, food and
gifts in order to provide these
seniors with a nice lunch,
drinks and dessert. After
lunch, bingo is played, where
all the seniors win a gift or two,
and in addition, each one will
receive a snack pack.
Four of these parties were
held in 1996: a Valentine party
in February, a Spring party in
April, a Christmas in July
party, and a Fall Harvest
party. Many times additional
gifts are sent to those unable to
participate, but in need of
clothing or just a gift to be re-
membered by.
These parties are only pos-
sible with the help and kind-
ness of volunteers and donors.
• With Christmas near, the
nursing homes have furnished
names of the residents without
family, so gifts can be taken to
these individuals.
If you are interested in help-
ing with these Senior Parties
by donations, you may do so
through: Faith Lutheran
Church, McDade, Tx., c/o Se-
nior Parties. For more informa-
tion and other gift donations
contact Cathryn Duggan, 273-
2304, or Christa Prewitt, 281-
| 2916.
Defensive Driving classes an*
suspended for December to
give the instructor a much
needed vacation. They will re-
sume on Jan. 8 and 9 at 6 p.m.
in the Giddings High School
Cafeteria. The cost is $35, pay-
able at the door. Call the Com-
munity Education office to re-
serve a seat.
Community Education has
recently received a $3,000
grant from the Texas Literacy
Resource Center at Texas
A&M University. The money
will be spent to connect the
Knox Learning Center's adult
education programs to the
internet. Four internet connec-
tions have been secured. These
should be up and running soon.
Community Education plans to
offer instruction to the public
on using the internet in Janu-
ary. If you are interested in get-
ting on the list of those want-
ing instruction or just curious
about the internet, please call
Community Education.
