Health Fraud
Youth and good health are
valued in our culture
Advertisements tell us that if we
just eat right, exercise enough and
take the right pill, we will never be
sick or old.
Interest in good health and a
desire for quick and easy answers
to chronic health problems makes
us vulnerable to health fraud. More
than 28 billion dollars are spent on
health fraud each year, and the
added human cost due to delayed
treatment, poor diet, poisoning and
emotional pain cannot be
measured.
Health fraud promotes products
and cures that do not work or are
not safe. A Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) study of
health fraud in newspaper ads
found more than half the fraudulent
ads were for weight loss.
L-
Why Are We Prone to Health
Fraud? People want to be perfect
We want to be healthy, good
looking, athletic and sexy, but
often, our genes and our
environment work against us
Health fraud offers us hope by
using words like amazing, secret
formula and painless to get us to
buy into the treatment
Health fraud promoters attract
people because they spend time
with them and pay a great deal of
attention to their needs The
promoters offer not only cures but
also friendship and support
How Do You Identify A Health
Fraud? Health fraud promoters
are sometimes called quacks.
Quacks promise quick and easy
results They push extremes They
want you to use something to
excess or not use it at all. Case
studies and testimonials support
their claims, instead of valid
research. Often, they say their
product or method can cure a
number of health problems. The
quacks use words that sound like
real medical terms. Sometimes
they have diplomas from fake
schools or health organizations.
Here is a Crackdown on Quacks
Checklist. Ask yourself the
following questions the next time
you suspect health fraud:
/What makes this person
qualified to promote this treatment?
/What scientific proof is there
to support this treatment?
/Do the ads for the treatment
use testimonials and exaggerated
language to describe it?
/Is the treatment supposed to
cure a number of illnesses or an
incurable disease.
/What do your health
professionals think about this
treatment?
/Does the promoter of the
treatment claim he is
misunderstood and persecuted by
traditional medical professionals?
/Does the treatment excessively
use or restrict any food,
supplement or medication?
/Is the treatment available only
by telephone or mail order?
