The tenth anniversary of the
Galveston County - Nasa Area
SPCA, Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to -
Animals will be observed
June 10 with a reception and
open house to be held from 1
p.m. until 5 p.m. at the animal
shelter in San Leon. The
public is invited to attend and
see the facilities. The shelter
is located one-fourth mile
North and one block East of
Hwy. Junction 517 and 146.
The Galveston County
SPCA was formed Feb. 7,1967
and two years later the shelter
was started. Mrs. Elizabeth
Hill who had previously been
shelter manager in Alexan-
dria, was hired as shelter
manager.
There was little funds on
hand and no facilities for
animals so for the first two
years some members offered
their homes and yards to keep
the animals apd served as a
telephone clearing house
directing persons to their
homes or bringing pets to •
those who desired to adopt
them.
In order to make this 10th
anniversary an outstanding
event volunteers are needed
to coordinate activities for the
celebration. Volunteers
should contact Pat Jackson at-
763-6473. Contributions, which
are tax-deductible, should be
sent to the SPCA at Rt. 1, Box
154M, Dickinson, TX 77539.
Volunteers are also needed for
education, cruelty in-
vestigation, publicity, fund-
raising, and arts - and - crafts
making and selling com-
mittees. The shelter can be
called at 559-2626. "

McKenzie will have been
employed with the city two
years this July. Her previous
jobs were also secretarial
type jobs but none were of the
governmental sort.
“Mr, Bailey (J. Alton,,
former Manvel Mayor),
approached me and asked me
if I would like the job of city
secretary. He knew I had a
good background and had
plenty of experience.
“It took me two weeks to
decide that I finally wanted it.
.I had never even been to a

very much involved. I have so
much more knowledge of the
government.” '
Her dutiesinciude issuing
permits, handling ordinances,
correspondence, tons of
paperwork, answering the
phone and “just whatever

“I find government jobs
very interesting. You do a
tremendous amount of work
with the public and I never get
bored.” ”
McKenzie said Manvel city
hall will probably open full
time (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) by Jan. 1
of next year because of the
city’s tremendous growth. ’
