AUSTIN, Texas (UPI) -
Gov. Bill Clements has unwit-
tingly aided the unionization of
teachers, says the president of
the Texas Federation of Tea- |
chers.
June L. Karp, president of
the AFL-CIO teacher affiliate,
said Tuesday the 5.1 percent
pay increase granted teachers
by state legislators was meager
and that the group would begin ■
immediate collective bargain-
ing talks with local school
district officials to increase that
amount.
Ms Karp, however, said
teachers were pleased 'with
provisions of the new school
finance bill providing additional
state funding for financially
troubled school districts.
The Texas Federation of
Teachers realizes these monies
can be used to help kids and |
teachers, and the language of
the bil allows the district to
put this money to that use,”
she said.
