2 ____ The hired man knew that sick
their husbands. He was male and
independent as their husbands
were, and solitary. But at least,
if he wouldn’t obey a woman, he
would listen to her, or appear to
Whatever happened to the hired
mant
He did like everybody else has
tried to do in the middle of the
20th century. He specialized. H»
matried and had his own off-
spring. His ears belong to his ows
wife, his play time to his ova
children
Today one hired man is hired to
fix toe television set Another
hired man is hired to fix one part
of the plumbing, and still another
to meet another plumbtag prob-
lem. A fourth hired man can re
pair abort circuits and is an au-
tnority on light bulbs, up to 100
watts.
In an age of specilization the
only true all-around hired man
in a home is the housewife her-
self. Thiis is why, if a husband
came home at midday, he might
find nis wife in the kitchen all
alone and talking to herseiz.
Who else is there to listen to

NEW YORK IB—Remember the
hired man*
A generation ago he began to
eisevpeer from the American
scene, and left a gap in family
life that has never quite been
filled. There is none to take hia
place.
The hired man at one time was
a neighborhood resource, the
poor relation by loyalty but not
by blood of a dozen or so
families he had adopted.
Any family in the community
could ask the hired man to work
for them. He generally worked
only for the families he chose,
lorn as he was.
His pay was invariably low. No-
body spoiled him with money.
Nobody expected him to brood
over the fact hia fate was to
brush the dust from the welcome
mat spread for other feet
Often he would work for sick
people, who having survived
local medicine and escaped toe
local undertaker, would victori-
ously call in the hired man to
brighten up the place to make
them feel better.
