The 1,953 persons arrested for
DWI in the two counties compares
to the 950 persons arrested over the
Between Wednesday evening, March 27, and Thursday morning,
March 28, unknown, person[s] broke the window on the northwest
corner of the Texas National Guard Armory located at 510 Armory
Street, Mercedes. Through the window, the person[s] were able to
climb inside and burglarize the building. Taken from the building are
the items listed: four camouflage pattern jackets, two sleeping bags,
seven 36” riot wooden batons and 10 riot batons [state property].
The Mercedes Crime Stoppers will pay a reward for information
leading to the arrest and indictment of the person[s] involved in this
crime or any other crime. All information is kept confidential. To give

number of intoxicated drivers on
our highways, says officer Sher-
wood Hamilton, director of public
information.
Sgts. Art Garza and James
Bernhardt, in charge of the highway
patrol in the McAllen office, posted
arrest figures for the month of
March that broke all existing
records in the Valley, if not in the
entire state of Texas. The state
troopers, working in Hidalgo
County, arrested a total of 148
persons for driving while intoxi-
cated.
The troopers working STEP also
issued 58 tickets for speeding, 256
tickets for other offenses and 247
warnings for various infractions of
four months that the project has
been in operation.

Mercedes police answered a
total of 138 calls during the
week-long period that ended
Monday morning, reports Service
Officer Roy Quintanilha.
After assistance to the public
calls that numbered 25, criminal
mischief and suspicious persons
calls shared honors for most
criminal activities on the listing, at
15 each. Some 11 “traffic related
incidents” were reported.

Major incidents included bur-
glary of habitation, five calls,
vehicle burglary, one call, two
thefts, three stolen vehicles, one
fight, four disturbances and two
civil matters.
Accidents numbered eight, while
hit-and-run incidents added two to
the list.
Alcohol related incidents
numbered seven and accounted for
most of the force’s five arrests of
the period.
Five alarms calls were answer-
ed, while harrassment/threats num-
bered three. On six occasions,
assistance was requested by
another agency, and three assaults
were reported.
Some 13 miscellaneous calls
include two for recovery of stolen
property, nine “juvenile problems”
and two narcotic violations, the
officer reports.

Veterans’ Land Board grant
program will be offered next
Monday at the regular semi-
monthly meeting of the Mercedes
American Legion, reports Post
Commander Rafael Rodriguez.
Eddie Gonzalez, representing

Mauro, will offer the presentation, /
which will include details on
eligibility and procedures for
securing land under the program.

arrested by troopers working their
regular shifts.
The total for the two counties in
the STEP project has been
alarmingly high. In the four months
of operation, troopers have arrested
