The folks at McAfee Agency had a celebration last week to mark 50 years of association with United
State Fidelity and Guaranty Company, their principal insurance carrier.
We at Mercedes National Bank think it’s notable that the two firms have had not only such a long
association, but such a successful one, as well. McAfee now ranks among the 10 largest insurance
agencies in the Valley -- and its headquarters is in Mercedes.

that the firm’s sales volume has
doubled since 1980.

the years,” Mr. Garza says.
- “We’re now a Valley-wide firm
headquartered in Mercedes. A
majority of our business comes from
McAllen, Harlingen and Browns-
ville.”
“In terms of sales, our volume
has doubled since 1980,” he
continues. “We have over 4500
customers from across the Valley.”
Mr. Garza credits much of the
agency’s success to his associates

The company is larger than it

history, and Mr. Garza expects
even more growth. “We forsee
doubling our volume again in
another four years.”
The firm was established in 1935
by Richard McAfee, who though
involved in several partnerships
over the years, remained the
principal owner.
Mr. Garza was hired July 1,
1967 as an automobile policy clerk
and later held positions in every
department. He now heads what is
among the 10 largest Valley
insurance agencies.
