Today’s Free Masons don’t cut
stone or build buildings but are dedi-
cated to building better men and a
better world. Dependent organizations,
including Scottish Rite, York Rite,
Shrine, Grotto, Eastern Star, Rainbow
Girls, DeMolay, etc., are focused on
charity and character improvement.
The 22 Shrine hospitals are spend-
ing well over $2 million dollars a day
(365 days a year) in free service to
young people who are handicapped
and heed corrective surgery or other
treatments. Its Scottish Rite group has
funded the major research into Schizo-
phrenia and related mental conditions.
Masonry is. a world-wide brother-
hood. When one visits a Masonic lodge,
he will see that the center of the lodge
room displays Holy Scriptures on the
altar. In our Judeo-Christian part of
the world the Holy Bible is on the
altar. In Islamic Lodges, the Koran is
displayed.
In other parts of the world, the
appropriate Holy Writings grace the
altar. Masonry embraces all religions
and accepts any good man who sin-
cerely believes in the Supreme Being.
The purpose of the Holy Scripture on
the altar is to make oaths more bind-
ing.
While Masonry is not a religion, it
encourages every member to support
and practice the religion of his choice.
(However, any discussion of religion
or politics is forbidden in the precincts
of the Lodge.) The countries without
Masonic Lodges are dictatorships or
communist countries where lodges are
closed by law or edict. Mercedes people
are welcome to accept the invitation to
visit the lodge and become better ac-
quainted with this ancient fraternity.

NEED FOR BUDGETSURPLUS IN MERCEDES
SCHOOLS is shown by the graphic produced
by Texas Comptroller John Sharp. The chart
gives an indication of the local district’s total
dependence on state funding. Of the 18.1
million budget, only about $1.2 million is
raised locally. With contractual obligations
of $4.9 million, the district has the ability to
borrow only $500,000. Should state funding
be cut off, there would be a shortfall between
the balance on hand and the district’s ability
to borrow by some $300,000, (using figures
from last March.) “This makes our budget
surplus an absolute necessity,” says
Superintendent Monte Churchill. “The surplus
is not only not too large, it falls short of what
we would need in the worst case.”The balance
on hand has come from funds the district has
managed to accumulate over the years
through savings and shrewd financial
management. The item was presented to the
school board as general information during
their meeting earlier in the month.
