Democracy comes from the
Greek words demos kratein which
means rule by the people.
For thousands of years people
in different ages have struggled
to obtain democracy. When the
history of civilization began in
Western Asia and Egypt, we find
that democracy was unknown. In
great oriental nations like Baby-
lonia and Assyria, an absolute mon-
arch ruled without any legal limit-
ations of importance.
The first dawn of democracy oc-
curred in Greece. There were a
number of tiny little states which
met in general assembly to speak
and vote. At first these states were
presided over by kings, but these
kings payed careful attention to
the opinion of the Assembly. In
Athens by 500 B. C. the people had
gained partially full control. They
elected their own magistrates and
made their own laws. This was
the first step in democracy.
The Magna Carta in 1215 gave
Englishmen the rights to a dem-
ocracy They could then rule them-
selves. They established a Par-
liament in which the people were
represented. The modern political
