Dear Editor:
I am asking you to do me a personal favor and take a
few minutes to read what I've written below. What 1
have to say is meant for you, for your eyes, for your
heart.
We are living in the most crucial period perhaps in all
recorded history. "I know," you are saying, "every
generation has felt that way." We've always had crises,
and we've always managed to survive." Yes, we've
always had crises, but our complacency about the ability
to survive, not only as Jews but as human beings, burned
in the ashes of the crematoriums and collapsed in the
ruins of Hiroshima.
Struggles between the forces of good and the forces
of evil have been taking place since the serpent first
slithered into the Garden of Eden. But never have the
battle lines between good and evil been drawn on so
broad, so terrifying a scale as they were during the Nazi
regime.
And what did we — as Americans, as Jews — do? Most
of us, and our parents, sat in the stands and were
horrified spectators to the battle. We booed the villains
and wept as our fellow Jews were penalized for being
Jews and sent to the showers — at Auschwitz,
Bergen-Belsen, and Dachau.
But we lucked out: from the charnel houses a new

for further negotiations on an
Israeli withdrawal from Egyptian
territory captured in 1967.
Sadat was quoted as telling
Egyptian journalists at a press
conference in Rabat that Israel
must with draw from all
occupted Arab territories, not
Egyptian territory alone. “Israel
wants to foment trouble among
the Arab countries by creating
sensitive situations. Withdrawal
should take place on Arab
fronts,” Sadat said.
He also reportedly said he
had informed Secretary of State
Henry Kissinger of Egypt’s
position. Kissinger, in
Bangladesh on Oct. 31 said he
did not believe the Arab summit
meeting in Rabat had foreclosed
further Arab-Israeli peace talks
but he would hold further
discussions with Arab leaders to
determine how best to proceed.
