Sheltering Arms offers more
than 20 different programs vary-
ing from homemaker assistance
to Home Weatherization to Friend-
ly Visitors. The programs enable
seniors of the community to work
for their independence and to re-
main vitally within their community
and home.
Shared Housing is another ex-
ample of how independence for
seniors is encouraged. But not only
do seniors benefit. Shared Hous-
ing i s available for all ages and may
be found in a variety of neighbor-
hoods.
Finances, the desire for com-
panionship and the willingness to
share housework may all be rea-
sons for people seeking house-
mates. Sheltering Arms Shared
Housing (SASH) acts as a type of
roommate matching service.
Potential homesharers come
from all backgrounds and have var-
ied needs. High rents encourage
some homeseekers to explore less
expensive housing options. The
desire for companionship, extra
safety or someone to share house-
keeping chores may be additional
reasons. Homesharing may allow
seniors who otherwise might re-
luctantly give up their homes be-
cause of burdensome costs or
chores to retain their homes.
Potential homeseekers (those
hunting for less expensive housing
alternatives) and home providers
(those with an extra bedroom seek-
ing a housemate) become aware
of the program through newspa-
per advertisements, radio and tel-
evision spots and fliers.
At least one of the pair seeking a
homesharing relationship must
be 60 years of age or older, but all
adults over the age of 18 are en-
couraged to apply. At present, the
age of potential homesharers
range from 18 to 94 years of age.
A very detailed screening process
is followed to assure reliable and
hopefully compatible housemates,
after a preliminary telephone
screening to assure that the indi-
vidual is suitable for the program,
a personal interview is conducted.
Potential home providers have
their homes checked to determine
their suitability.
WASHINGTON,-Indictment
of Israeli Air Force Col. Aviem Sella
for espionage by a federal grand
jury here in connection with the
Pollard spy case raised charges of
broken promises in Washington
and Jerusalem.
The three-count indictment
came the day before Jonathan J.
Pollard and his wife, Anne-Hen-
derson Pollard, were to be sen-
tenced in Federal District Court
for their confessed participation
in the sale of U.S. classified infor-
mation to Israelis.
It also followed by a day Israeli
Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir’s
denial of Pollard's allegation that
Israeli leaders knew of his activities.
Pollard made the allegations in a
11,000-word presentencing state-
ment to the court in which he asked
leniency in punishment for himself
and freedom for his wife.
"With regard to Israel, all our
official statementshave been
true," Shamir said in reference to
the Israeli government's state-
ments since the arrest of the Pol-
lards in November 1984 that Is-
raelis involved in the case ran a
"renegade" operation in violation
of Israeli policy and government
instructions.
