MAKE THE

FOR SAFETVI
“Two months ago, the Endowment Fund of the Jewish Com-
munity of Houston made a very generous donation of $500.1
would be grateful if you would pass this letter on to the Board
of Trustees of the Fund and convey our thanks. We have not
written until now because of the Pesah holiday and because we
have no professional help (we are all volunteers).
‘I thought that the Board might like to hear of our recent
activities. At the beginning of the year we contributed $270 to
a highly successful Chanukah party organized under the aus-
pices of the Community Center under the title ‘The Ethiopian
Jews invite their neighbors to celebrate Chanukah with them.’
Our contribution enabled the organizers to hire a magician,
ensuring a large turnout of local non-Ethiopian children and
their parents. At the party, the chief rabbi of Safed, R. David
Dayan, spoke.
“We contributed about $960to assist afternoon enrichment
and homework classes held in two local primary schools which
the 70 or so Ethiopian children attend. We hire first-rate teach-
ers to come in for extra hours in the afternoon to conduct these
classes.
“There are some immigrant children who are so bright that
they don't need such help, but they do need other activities to
challenge them. One of them is Meir Nagusa, whom we per-
suaded to enroll for music lessons at the Conservatory (he is
learning the French horn). We are helping to subsidize these
lessons in the hope that he will soon be able to join the Safed
Youth Band. If he does make the grade, you can imagine how
much this will improve the immigrants' self-esteem and their
image in the eyes of Safed's population as a whole (even though
they have been very well-received by the locals).
"At Pesah we made a token gift to each of nearly 90 families:
a bottle of wine and a packet of Pesah cookies. The actual dis-
tribution of the gifts was in itself another opportunity to
strengthen the feelings of affection between the locals and the
immigrants.
"On behalf of the immigrants and the Committee (of which
several immigrants are active members) I thank you and the
Board of Trustees very sincerely.
"With best wishes, Yehoshua Sivan, chairman."
