- Sherwin Newar receives ADL’s Popkin Award
Amid a standing ovation, Sherwin Newar was presented the Anti-Defamation League's
(ADL’s) distinguished Milton Popkin Award for his efforts to promote harmonious in-
tergroup relations. A former chairman of the agency's Southwest Regional Board,
Newar began his association with ADL over 20 years ago. Since then, his nonstop com-
mitment and dedication have added greatly to the agency's ability to combat anti-
Semitism and to secure justice and fair treatment for all citizens alike. -
During his many years of service with ADL, Newar has become known for his quiet
strength and leadership abilities that enable him to successfully serve as chairman of
many local and national committees including ADL's National Budget Committee.,
He currently serves as an ADL national commissioner.

National Jewish Leadership Council, an adhoc group for
the Clinton campaign with grass-roots membership. With
about 200 people attending the Washington assembly,
but accessible to all. But he emphasized he would not
physically move the American Embassy to Jerusalem "at
this time", because such a move "might destabilize the
present (peace) process in a way which would undermine
the very objectives we seek". <
Speaking this past week in the capital city, the antici-
pated Democratic nominee has pledged to the Clinton
Jewish Leadership Council (a newly formed support or-
ganization for his candidacy) that if elected President he
will strengthen U.S. relations with Israel and work with
the newly elected government headed by Yitzhak Rabin
to achieve a lasting and secure peace in the Middle East. ,
"The Palestinians should have the right, as specified at
Camp David, to participate in the determination of their
own future, but they do not have the right to determine
• Israel's future," he said. "And for that reason, I oppose
the creation of an independent Palestinian state", he add-
ed, according to a transcript of his remarks.
Clinton spoke to the "Jewish community seminar" that
was simultaneously conducted by satellite to a similar
meeting in Los Angeles. Questions were put to him from
all parts of the country. The seminar was arranged by the

A ubrey M. Farb was named chairman of State of Is-
o rael Bonds Notable Prime Minister's Club, the
A most exclusive Israel Bonds honor society for
W W purchasers of $250,000 or more, according to
Houston Israel Bonds general chairman William S. Gold-
berg. ’
"Members of the Notable Prime Minister's Club (PMC) .
have made an extraordinary commitment to the State of
Israel and this commitment is needed now more than
ever before. Aubrey Farb is just the right person to gener-
ate this commitment, his dynamism reflected in his dis-
* tinguished record of community service. He has innova-
tive ideas about financing investments in Israel bonds and
notes, and he will be exploring these with the national .
Bonds organizations," said Goldberg.

stat and Hyman Bookbinder, Washington. The latter three
are leaders in the National Democratic Council.
Declaring that he would never let Israel down, Clinton
pointed out that he and his wife, Hillary, had gone to the
Jewish state for the first time 11 years ago. He concluded
his address by recalling that his pastor at a Baptist church ..
. in Little Rock was a close friend of Israel and began visit-
ing there even before the State of Israel was created. "And,'
when he was on his death bed, he said to me that he hoped
one day I'd have a chance to run for President, but that if
I ever let Israel down, God would never forgive me. I want
you to know that I think he's looking at me, and if I’m.
elected President,I’ll never let Israel down?" His promise
was applauded.
He had barbs for both President Bush and Ross Perot,
saying he had a title for his campaign autobiography - "A *
Billionaire, a Millionaire and Me”. Lashing out at the in- '
cumbent President at length, he described Bush's press
conference on last Sept. 12, when Jewish leaders were at
the Capitol seeking support for loan guarantees for Israel, ,

AN INVITATION TO
MEET PERSONALLY
WITH BILL CLINTON
• ouston’s own Clinton for President Host
E Committee (in formation) invites the
I D community to meet with Presidential
■ • candidate Bill Clinton on Thursday eve-"
ning, July 23. The event will take place between
6:30-7:30 p.m. in the home of Joyce and Arthur
Schechter, 19 A West Lane.
The invitation, in letter form, states in part that
"We think the time has come to make a decision on
the Presidential race. We have decided not to sit
back and let those with the loudest voiceof those
with the most funds decide who will guide our
country for the next four years. We have had enough
of the current leadership for many reasons. ... We
are therefore, ready to step forward and take the
initiative in helping to guide and promote the Clin-
Ton candidacy toward victory?'
Present host members of Clinton For President
Committee are Saranne Kosberg, Livingston Kos-
berg, Marvin Rich, Alan Levin, Joe Kaplan, Art Sadin,
Schrub Kempner, Gil Baker, Golda Baker, Vic Sam-
uels, Arthur Schechter, Billy B. Goldberg, Frieda
Dow and Melvin Dow.
"We are certain that Clinton more nearly agrees
with us on the issues of not only Israel and peace in
the Middle East, but, also separation of church and
state, prayer in school, women's freedom to choose
. and much more. He is the only candidate who has
definitive plans for improving the economy and the
state of education in America. He has presented his
plans during the campaign and will continue to re-
fine them as we input our thoughts, into these is-
sues. Our input is important and the best way to in-
fluence the process is to get involved in the cam-
paign now!
"The minimum check for this event is $1,000 per
couple. Governor Clinton will be present ... for a
very short time. His personal appearance, however,
is an indication of his respect for our community
and our concerns. We must demonstrate that we can
deliver for his campaign."_____

CORRECTION
In a story in the July 2 issue of
the JH-V, it was reported that there
were three kosher restaurants in
Houston. The eating establish-
ments in the Jewish Community
Centers, Kosher-Que in JCC/West
Houston and Mama's & Papa's in
JCC/Braeswood, were inadvertent-
ly omitted. Kosher-Que, which also
caters Texas barbecue, is the only
restaurant in Houston which, under
supervision of the Houston Kash-
ruth Association, is cleaned and
“torched” by religious ritual,
closes prior to Pesach and re-
opens during the holiday, in order
to provide the community with the
only public place where kosher
food is served during Pesach. □
