^y. I was surprised and asked why.
‘‘Because just ahead of us is stationed
a battalion of woman soldiers of . *he
red army” explained the guide a little
uneasily^ “They may not have finished
their morning toilet.”
-What?” I exclaimed. “A woman’s
battalion? I did not have the faintest
idea that women were fighting for you.”
The guide became enthusiastic. “It
has pmbably been explained to you.” he
•aid. “that we consider al! people as
equal and sex is completely eliminated.
If a woman proves to us that she has
the same spirit as that which dominates
the men we give her a rifle and belt of
cartridges and send her to the front.
And the women who are fighting at the
front have proved that they are made of
the same meta! as the workingmen who
have joined our army.”

to the driver of our automobile. Then
we speeded toward a cluster of country

horizon and inside of five minutes we
drew up at the entrance to the village.
"I must go and see if everybody is
readv." apologized the guide. He went
on and three minutes later was back.
"The women are at breakfast." he said j
giving the driver instructions to pro-|
ceed. Then at a alow pace we wound
our way through groups of women wit
rifles under their arms or at their feet
and cartridge belts slnng over then
shoulders or fastened around their hips.
Militant looking creatures they were
apparently having lost all that sense of
vanity supposed to be part of the com-
position of every daughter of Eve.
Presented I nkempt Appearance.
As they gazed at us they displayed
eyes dull with the lack of sleep and
eyes with pouches tinder them and
heavy black circles around them. Their
noses shone and deep lines ran from the
base of the nose to the corners of the
mouth. Their hair hung in strands
around their faces or was untidily fas-
tened in knots. Their clothes were dirty
and it was evident that they had slept
in them. Their shoes were torn or cov-
ered with mud.
Yet there was something about them
that aroused in one a profound feeling
of respect. Perhaps it was the vitality
with which they carried on conversation
among themselves while eating black
bread with grease and drinking coffee
without milk or sugar. Perhaps it was
their upright carriage and firm stride
as they walked along carrying the heavy
rifles. Though dirty and unfeminine
in appearance one felt like taking off
one's hat to these women.
The front was only three or four kilo-
meters away from this female battalion
of the red army. Although it was just
a few minutes past 6 o’clock the rumble
of heavy guns from Wesel rolled over
the plains lying between the women s
quarters and the front.
“Of Course We Shall Fight."
We located the council of women.
They all turned around as we entered.
These were the women who were taking

Cracksmen who blew the safe in the
store of G. L. Wisdom at Mulberry.
Ark. thrte weeks ago. have been recent
visitors to San Antonio and while here
discarded bank stock and registered gov-
ernment stamps taken from 44 isdom s
strong box. So far as is known they
made no effort to operate in this city.
Several days ago a package containing
a certificate for $5OO worth of ^tock
in the Fann»r« and Merchants Bank of
Mulberry in registered war stamps
and several thrift stamps were found
in the San Antonio & Aransas Pass
Railroad yard'. The package also con-
tained cancelled checks on the Mulberry
bank. The articles were turned over
to the sheriffs department and on in-
vestigation were found to have belonged
to Wisdom. A letter to him brought
the information that the package was
taken from his safe by robbers. It is
believed that it was diwarded because
the stamps were registered and the bank
stock was not transferable without pos-

PLANS CHILD HEALTH
CENTER IN EVERY
COUNTY IN TEXAS
State Health Officer Hopes
to Aid Mothers and •
Sick Infants.
Austin. Tex. April 3. — Simplicity
will be the keynote of the child health
center which Dr. C. W. Goddard state
health officer proposes to establish iu
every county in Texas as an important
step toward raising the health standard
of the state. In its initial stage its
equipment will bo cojnprised of a pair ot
baby scales a table with tajie attached
for measuring and a series of charts il-
lustrating the different phases of child
bxaicne. including statistics showing the
value of each as well as how a child’s
development may best be accomplished.
“These centers are not merely meet-
ing places for mothers to bring sick in-
fants but are educational centers as
well where they will receive instruc-
tion from experts” said Dr. Goddard.
"Results of examinations of soldiers
during the world war developed beyond
the shadow of a doubt that many of
their physical defects were due to neg-
lect during infancy. Such things as de-
formities of various types date back al-
most to the hour of their birth and if
these things are to be corrected in that
the child may develop into a real man
or woman as was intended it is impera-
tive that he receive this early attention
and at the hands of persons who know
what must be done to bring about the
desired results.”
Continuing Dr. Goddard said:
“There is no particular or special
limitation to be placed on the activities
of these centers as they may be ex
panded at the needs of the community
may demand from time to time to in-
clude dietetic clinics for children of
various ages and dental clinics where
oral hygiene will be emphasised defects
pointed out and recommendations made
and where very necessary instructions
for the care of the teeth may be given.
Also tuberculosis clinics mental clinics
and general clinics will be added as
occasion demands or communities de-
sire.
HIGHWAY OFFICIALS
ARE ELIMINATING
GRADE CROSSINGS
More Than One Handr ed
Have Been Removed Dar-
ing Last Two Years.
Austin Tex. April 3.—Within the
last two years the State Highway De-
partment Las succeeded in eliminating
more than one hundred railroad grade
crossings on state highways according
to G. G. Wickline bridge engineer of
the department. This action has been
taken in order to awp the rapid in-
crease in the number of accidents which
has been occasioned by the development
of motor vehicle* and the increase both
in population and railroad traffic.
In Texas the figures for last year
show a slight decrease in the number
of accidents due to the following causesl
says Mr Wickline: (11 exceedingly wet
year tourist travel curtailed by bad l
roads; (21 fewer intoxicated drivers of
automobiles prohibition in effect; (3)
people becoming more cautious due to
" safety first” educational campaigns.
The most notable eliminations pro-
vided for are on the Dallas-Fort Worth
Road in which four grade crossings in
Dallas County will be eliminated and
four in Tarrant County which will be I
accomplished by new location of the:
highway and by providing crossings
either unCeV or over the niilroad.
“Numerous fatal accidents have oc-
curred on this highway as the traffic is
very heavy at present and is gradually
increasing both on the highway and the
railroads.” say* Mr. Wickline’s state-
ment. Quoting him further “this is
considered a very valuable improvc-
bent.
“Nine grade crossings are eliminated
in Montague County on State Highway
No. 2. Nine grade crossings ar»* elimin-
ated in Hill County on State Highway
No. 6; also eight grade crowing* are
eliminated in Hill County on State
Highway No. 2-A and on numerous
other projects.

COMB SAGE TEA
INTO GRAY HAIR
Darkens Beautifully and Re-
stores Its Natural Color
and Lustre at Once.
Common garden sage brewed into a
heavy tea with sulphur and alcohol
added will turn gray streaked and
faded hair beautifully dark and lux-
uriant. Mixing the Sage Tea and Sul-
phur recipe at home though is
troublesome. An easier way is to got
the ready-to-tise preparation improved
by the addition of other ingredients
a large bottle at little cost at drug
stores known as “Wyeth’s Sage and
.Sulphur Compound” thus avoiding a
lot of muss.
While gray faded hair is not sinful
wc al! desire to retain our youthful
appearance and attractiveness. By
darkening your hair with Wyeth's Sage
and Sulphur Compound no one can
tell because it does it so naturally so
evenly. You just dampen a sponge or
soft brush with it and draw this
through your hair taking one small
strand at a time; by morning all gray
hairs have disappeared. After another
application or two your hair beedmes
beautifully dark glossy soft and lux-
uriant and you appear years younger.

Teeth You Envy
Are Cleaned in This Way You Will Find
Free

Pepsodent.
See offer below.
Millions of Them
Millions of teeth are being cleaned in a new
way. You see them everywhere — white glis-
tening teeth. Ask about them. You will find
the owners are now fighting film.
Film is the great tooth wrecker. Most tooth
troubles are now traced to it. And film is the
reason why well-brushed teeth discolor and
decay.
How Film Wrecks Teeth
Film is that slimy coat which you feel with
your tongue. It clings to teeth enters crev-
ices and stays. The ordinary tooth paste does
not dissolve it and the tooth brush alone can’t
end it.
Film is what discolors —not the teeth. It
is the basis of tartar. It holds food substance
which ferments and forms acid. It holds the
acid in contact with the teeth to cause decay.
Millions of germs breed in it. They with
tartar are the chief cause of pyorrhea. So
despite the tooth brush all these troubles have
been constantly increasing.
Now dental science after years of search-
ing. has found a way to combat film. The
facts have been proved by five years of clinical
and laboratory tests.
The method is now embodied in a dentifrice
called Pepsodent. Leading dentists all over
America are urging its adoption. And mil-
lions of teeth now show what it can do.

A 10-Day Tube of Pepsodent is offered now
to anyone who asks. This to quickly show all
people what it does. For your sake and your
children’s sake we urge this ten-day test.
Pepsodent is based on pepsin the digestant
of albumin. The film is albuminous matter.
The object of Pepsodent is to dissolve it then
to day by day combat it.
But pepsin must be activated and the usual
agent is an acid harmful to the teeth. So this
method long seemed barred. Now science has
made it possible by discovering a harmless
activating method. And everyone who will
can daily fight this film.
A Test is Free to All

sults are quick and apparent.
