City officials have adopted a new program to help
knock out, or rather down, unsafe buildings around
Alvin.
City employee Billy Gerber said the process of

allows property owners to reduce some of their
costs and time by volunteering to pay for City
workers to level their unsafe structures.
“If the property owner voluntarily signs over for
the City to do it (demolition work), the City will do
it at cost,” Gerber said.

A $6,000 bill from the Manvel Volunteer
Fire Department for services rendered to the
Alvin Independent School District has district
officials up in arms, and Manvel City leaders
throwing their arms up in the air.
The charge came from MVFD’s involvement
in battling a fire at Manvel Junior High School.
According to Manvel City officials, staff there
had put mops in a dryer, thinking they were
only wet, but the liquid on the cleaning tools
proved to be flammable.
According to the bill from the MVFD, it took
less than two hours to extinguish the blaze.
This is a third-grade team coached by Brian Watson. Team members are
Justin Gillman, Alex Hageman, Blane Fitzhenry, Matt Hamilton, James
Watson and Austin Stamper. The group won The Ranatra Fusca
Creativity Award, which represents the essence of the Odyssey of the
Mind. It is presented to teams who exhibit exceptional creativity, either
through some aspect of their problem solution or an extraordinary idea
beyond the problem solution.

City workers tear down an old house on Hill Street. Under a new streamlined program, those with
unsafe structures can volunteer to pay the City the cost of demolishing buildings. City officials hope
