“To the American Mothers,” is
the title of the following commu-
nication which has just been re-
ceived by the Tribune 1rom L’Idee
Francaise a l’etranger, 11 Place de
la Bourse, Paris:
"L’Idee Francaise a l’Etranger,
which has taken the initiative in
opening the homes of France to the
American soldiers, continues its
work for solidarity of morale.
"The women’s section of the or-
ganization, sharing the grief of
those Americans mothers Whose
sons have already gloriously fallen
with their arms in hand, offers
the assurance, in all possible meas-
ure, that the graves of foreign sol-
diers who have died on our soil
Shall be preserved.
"We intend that these graves,
as they are identified, shall be
preserved, cared for and decorated
with flowers as are those of our
own sons. This Work will further-
more be continued after the war.
We will care for these remains and
will give them the same pious care
accorded those of our own sons
with whom they will have shared
perils and at whose sides they will
have fallen in a common struggle
for the liberty of the peoples.
American mothers, dear sisters
in grief, be with us.
“Here is, for the mothers of
France, a duty of gratitude which
they assume with a sympathetic
heart."

The following summary of Weather
and crop conditions in Texas for the
week ending Sept. 17 is issued by Ber-
nard Bunnemeyer, meteorologist of the
United States district (weather bureau
at Houston: •
There was no precipitation during
the week, except on the last day when
a few local showers occurred in the
northwestern and southwestern por-
tions of the state, and the weather Was
ideal for the rice harvest and cotton
picking; but pastures, feed crops, sweet
potatoes, peanuts, cane, truck, and fall
gardens were unfavorably affected by
the dry and warm weather. Prepara-
tion of the soil for winter grains is
progressing and some winter wheat has
been sown. Late cotton was still mak-
ing growth and a small top crop is
indicated in a few localities. The plants
are mostly dead, however. Picking is
about completed in much of Central and
South Texas. The yield is generally
poor, except in eastern and some coast
counties where it ranges from fair to
good. Some complaints were received
of lack of labor for the rice, harvest.
mobile rides, working this method in
a suspicions manner. The witness
stated that they would meet up with
the officers on the beach front, then
take a street car, the officers follow-
ing in automobiles, and later in the
evening they would meet again. This
procedure, according to the witness,
has been going on for some little
time, and he said that he had been
watching the two women in question
for some little time.
One of hte women stated that she
had been working up until the past
two of three days, and that since that
time she had laid off intending to leave
town, and that the arrest had inter-
fered with her plans. Upon her state-
ment, the judge said that he would
withhold judgment pending the out-
come of the examination by the city
health authorities as to whether she
was afflicted with venereal diseases.
