ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED — Mr. and Mrs. Ramiro
Cuellar announce the engagement and approaching mar-
riage of their daughter, Celia, to Gabriel Castaneda, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Alfredo Castaneda, Sr., all of Mercedes. The
couple will be married in a 5:30 p.m. ceremony, June 11 at
the Mercedes Christian Church. A reception will follow to
honor to the pair at the McAllen Hilton. Both of the couple
are graduates of Mercedes High School. The bride-elect is
employed at River Valley Bank in McAllen, while her fiance
is employed by the County of Hidalgo.

IS KINDERGARTEN GRAD-
UATE — Georgina Guerrero,
six-year-old daughter of Fred
and Esmeralda Guerrero, was
graduated May 18 from the
kindergarten program at St.
Phillip Neri Oratory Academy
in Pharr. She was honored by
family members and friends at
a barbecue at the home of her
maternal grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Severo Cano of Mercedes.
The young graduate will be a
first grader at the Academy in
the fall.
The Board of Directors of Mercedes National Bank is proud to
announce the promotion of Lilly Carrillo to Bank Compliance Officer.
With 12 years of experience in banking, she has been on the staff
at Mercedes National since 1992, serving as Management Reporter.
Previous positions have also involved operations and management.
A graduate of Zapata High School, she attended Laredo Junior
College, and has completed a number of banking courses on topics
ranging from operations and management to computer training.
She and her husband, Francisco, have four children: Melissa, 13,
Jorge, eight, Francisco, III, five, and John David, two. The family has
membership with Holy Spirit Catholic Church in McAllen.
Mrs. Carrillo is another of the highly trained, highly dedicated staff
members at Mercedes National Bank. She is capable of assisting you
with any banking question — and she is eager to be of service.

set for
late June
The Pre-4th of July Bathing Beauty
Contest will be conducted on Sunday,
June 26 starting at 10 a.m. at the
Raymondville High School Audito-
rium, South 10th and Bearkat Streets,
Raymondville, organizers announce.
Girls age groups are Infant Miss,
0-11 months; Baby Miss 12-23 months;
Tot Miss 24-35 months; these groups
will start competition at 10 a.m.
Tiny Miss, 3-4 years; Petite Miss,
5-6 years old; Princess Miss, 7-8 years;
Little Miss, 9-10 years; Mini Miss, 11-
12 years; Teen Miss, 13-14-15 years,
and Sophisticated Miss, 16 years, and
over no age limit, and will start com-
petition at 2 p.m.
Stars and Stripes beauty queen
competition will be conducted the same
day, Sunday June 26. There will be
three age groups.
Contest is open for all Valley con-
testants and out-of-the Valley. Con-
testants may register the day of the
pageant or before the pageant. For

the home of Ruth Bork, in Harlingen,
on Thursday, May 26, with Verna
Edgemon presiding at what was the
last meeting of the year.
After the Federation Collect was
recited by those present, Martha Tutt
discussed the Hymn of the Month,
which was “Let All the World in Ev-
ery Corner Sing.” Jim Penn then led
the group in singing it, accompanied
by Virginia Sumerlin at the piano.
The program, prepared by Ilse
1 Drawe and Mary Alice Baingo, was on
" “Love.” A quiz written by Mrs. Drawe
was about famous lovers in music, and
Mrs. Baingo gave the commentaries
during the program. Laura Penn ac-
companied the soloists.
