Instructors at Mercedes High
School continue to sing the praises of
the Accelerated Reader program, call-
ing it “a tremendous success” at the
school during the year just ended.
The top two readers for year were
Ana Lisa Trevino and Monique
Fuentes who each achieved the high-
est points. Ana Lisa attained all of the
certification levels in her English II
class, where Cindy Cavazos was in-
structor, and Monique attained all but
the Honor certificate in her English II
class, taught by Mary Guillen.
A total of 218 students partici-
pated in the self-directed reading pro-
gram, which motivates them to read
by rewarding them with incentives,
instructors say. They earned the. in-
centives by scoring well on computer-
ized assessments and by attaining cer-
tification levels based on the amount
READERS OF THE YEAR — Kennedy El-
ementary School students shown here were
recognized as the top Accelerated Readers
for the school year 1996-97. First graders,
pictured above, are, in front from left, Jessy
Cadena, Janet de la Cerda, Lorena Molina,
Vanessa Lopez, Rodolfo Gutierrez, Samuel
Rodriguez and April Cantu. Middle row shows,
in, same order, Cassandra Cantu, Ubaldo
Hernandez, Isidro Alvarado, Kristimari
Hernandez, Robert Overfield and Abigail
Flores. Back row shows Carlos Betancourt,
of books they read, reading levels for
the books, and points earned.
They are also rewarded based on
the points they achieved on their read-
ing tests. The incentives, which in-
cluded candies, snack bar and Pizza
Hut coupons, were mostly funded from
school funds. However, a contribution
from Mercedes National Bank in the
amount of $1000 was an enormous
boost for the program, they add.
Mercedes High School Principal
Salvador Garcia credits the Acceler-
ated Reader program for an improve-
ment in TAAS reading scores. “The
Accelerated Reader program has re-
ally taken off this year,” he adds. His
strong support of the program has fos-
tered its success, the teachers say.
The English teachers and Mr.
Garcia say they hope to see even more
student participation in the upcoming
school year.
