involved with this program in the South
during this school term means the pace can
now be stepped up.
According to Southern Education Report-
ing Service, plans for desegregation were
implemented this fall in 139 Southern school

An issue which needs to be dealt with
promptly and decisively, is the question of
the Orange County Drainage District’s fut ire
level of spending This also is true, but to a
less significant degree of the Orange County
Navigation and Port District.
These matters arise from the recent an-
nouncement by Orange County : Commis-
sioners Court of the necessity for increasing
its basis for property tax assessments from
15 per cent to. 20 per cent of actual-value
cent years show that nearly all farmers are using
tractors nowadays ------

this week but failed to make page 1 of any of the
nation’s newspapers Either because so few of our
editors are born-and-bred country boys or else be-
cause other shocking news from the Capital crowded,

I might have missed it myself if I hadn't read,
way down into a news release from the U.S De-
partment of Commerce This handout was headed,
"Farm Census Will Tell What Is Happening to
Texas Agriculture ”
It relates what has taken place down on the
farm in Texas in prior years and announces that
a new census of farming will be conducted during
November and December of this year
On the second page of the news release is
this parenthetical statement: (For the first time,
a question about the number of horses and mules
* is missing from the 1964 farm census — there
were less than 3 million on all U-S. farms in
1959, compared with a peak of over 25 million in
