The devotional entitled
“Heeping Christmas'' taken
from Luke 12 11 was given
bysMrs. J. R. Robbins. Mrs
Lovice Brown spoke on “Sym-
bols In Christmas Art” and
For the past five years, many Lone Star Steel employees have fore-
gone the pleasure of exchanging Christmas cards Instead they have
" donated the money they would have used for cards to a very special
cause. It’s all explained below in the letter printed this week in place
of the regular “Names In The News." Author of the letter is L. D '"Red"
Webster, vice-president, public relations and advertising..
Dear Friends:
Back In February, 1963. I wrote you the following Open Letter:
"I entered the starkly bare treatment room at the Dallas Scottish
Rite Hospital for Crippled Children.
Seated on a long table, becked by a mirror, was a seven-year-old
like named Terry Lee Evans. The boy sat with his left leg encased in a
steel brace, hanging over the table’s edge. The brace fitted into a special
shoe constructed so as to make up for an inch or two of leg length lost
to disease
If for no other reason, I sew in this boy something of myself for he
had flaming red hair, and I couldn’t but think of the line which goes
"But for the grace of God, there go I." >
A "Hi. Red." I laid to Terry as I took his tiny hand in my big paw.
realising as I did that his hand, too, had been affected by polio.
"Don’t call me red," the boy said in an even but firm, voice as he
cocked clear blue eyes at me.
“Whatza matter." I asked, "don’t you like to be called Red?"
“Naw." he came back and glanced off in another direction.
Well.' I said. “I'm redheaded, too, and when I was about your size
I didn't like for the kids to call me Red. So they started calling me
Rusty, and Carrof-top. and Redheaded Woodpecker. So I finally got to
liking Red, and everybody still calls me that."
Terry looked at me with unbelieving eyes, and when I told him I
was there to give the hospifal $769 in behalf of the employees of Lone
Star Steel Company and that he was to receive it in behalf of all the kids
being treated et this hospital, his eyes lit up. They fairly sparkled when
I pulled the cash and checks out of an envelope. -
An ear-to-ear grin replaced the solemn expression he had worn and
he Mid "Ya mean all that money?"
I said. "Sure. Red and we’ll bring some more next year."
This time, he overlooked my- calling him Fed for his only remark
wee an amazed "Goshi"
They took e picture of me handing the boy the money. It wee one
of the proudest moments of my life, not for anything 1 had done, but I
wee proud of each one of you guys and gale who came through when I
eeked you to make a contribution to the Crippled Children’s Hospital in-
stead of exchanging Christmas cards among ourselves.
The picture-making done with, as I turned to go, Terry Mid
"G Bye, Red."
“Goodbye. Red.” I answered, and the smile I got in return made
me close the door quickly lest Terry wonder U I'd gotten onion in my
eyes "
That wee e couple of years ago. Today I called the Hospital to check
on Little Red. He’s doing fine, gets around In greet shape, has discarded
the crutches and lives the life of s normal active kid thanks again, to
a lot of wonderful people like you whose contributions keep the Scottish
Rite Hospital in business.
You see, there simply is no way for e patient to pay his way through
this hospital. If the parents are able to pay, then the child cannot be
accepted for treatment end must be taken to a regular public hospital.
If ths parents can’t pay, that’s s horse of anothed color. Like, for
instance, a while beck a distraught Lone Star dad had taken hie boy to
e nearby hospital, and it wee estimated the cost of treatment would be
something life $5000. The poor guy almost came epart. He talked to Bob
Hurtte, who talked to me. and 1 suggested application be made to the
Scottish Rite Hospital. The employee figured a patient bed to be the
__son or daughter of a Mason, which isn’t true at all, for the Hospital looks
at ’em all alike. There to no"line" of any kind—color, race or religion
The only requirement is that the victim be a crippled child with a treat-
able condition. -
The employee applied. His son was accepted.
That’s getting pretty close to home when one of our own family finds
the Scottish Rite Hospital s haven of hope.
So-it’s time to pass the bet again. All I suggest that you do is send
me a check made payable to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled
Children In the amount you otherwise would spend on Christmas cards
sent to your employee friends. If you would prefer, hand the chock or
cash to Mayo Lanagan or Bob Hurtte at the plant. When all of the
money to in. we'll print to Starlight; a king size Christmas card con
taining the names of all who took part. We’re alee going to print the names
in our area newspaper space. This way, you get to say "Merry Christmas”
and at the same time, help a crippled kid.
Since this program started. Lone Star employees and the Company
here donated something like $5000. How Shout this year our selling s
goal of just a dollar per employee on the average? This would give us a
whopping $4000-plus. Of course. M you can’t give s dollar or more, give
