A pretty, brown-eyed girl of 10 is walking nor-

Shirlee Pearson. 10. has walked since she was
I about two years old, but she walked on‘her toes with-,

l -mild case of cerebral palsy which had retarded the ,
I development of the muscles on the back side of her

Shirlee’s ankles were held rigid bynthe tinder-;
I developed muscles. . .
Her mother, Mrs Patsy Pearson, 8 Drive,
I said doctors became worried about Shirlee. when.
1 -at 18 months, she had not yet learned to crawl or

I "She was at least a wear behind the other chil-
■ dren," Mrs. Pearson said ___________,
Shirlee was taken to the Texas Children’s Hos-
I pital in Houston where she underwent extensive
* tests to determine the cause of her physical retarda-
tion’. -
"I found out what she didn’t have, but they were
not sure whether she had multiple sclerosis or cere- ’
bral palsy," Mrs. Pearsn said.
After Shirlee returned from the hospital, she
learned to walk well enough to go to school at Ljttle
Cypress with the other children her age.
During this time, she underwent various kinds of
physical therapy, including bllet lessons, to develop
the muscles in her legs. Nothing helped.
.The crossing of one eye, often a symptom of
.cerebral palsy, disappeared during these years.
‘ “She did well mentally jintil the second grade.”
Mrs. Pearson said. "Then she began to slow down.
She wasn’t able to gain weight."
