SNIPES ELECTED
The TWC Chess Club will meet
the NMSU Chess Club in a mem-
bership chess today at 1:30 p.m. in
Cotton Memorial. This is the first
of a series of chess tournaments to
be held by the club. A return match
will take place at NMSU campus.

Dr. E. A. Thormodsgaard will be
the principal speaker at a meetings
held in Nelly Brown Keller Hall
at Radford School on Tuesday at
2 p.m. He will speak on the future
of music in El Paso.
Burtner Picked
As Cadet Of Week
Simeon J. Burtner of the Second
Cadet Battle Group, Texas Western
College, has been named Cadet of
the Week.
Burtner is a sophomore Physics
Major. He is a member of F com-
pany.
Each week the cadet of the week
is chosen on the basis of appear-
ance, condition of weapon, general
knowledge and interest in the Ca-
det Corps.

New Officers
Kay Snipes was recently elected
president of the Zeta Tau Alpha
spring pledge class. Other officers
include Marvella Hinton, vice pre-
sident; Linda Tucker, secretary?
ttreasurer and Vivian House, cha-
plain.
Journalism major, was picked as
the Prospector business manager.
She was business manager for this
year’s Flowsheet and she has work-
ed on the staffs of the Prosceptor
and El Burro.
Picked to head up next year’s El
Burro was Mrs. Joye Scheffler, a
sophomore education major. Mrs.
Scheffler has worked on the staffs
of the Prospector and El Burro.
Jerry Burkes, a sophomore psy-
chology major, will be the business
manager for next year’s Burro. He
is currently the business manager
for El Burro and this will be his
second semester in that position.

Gayle Kahn was elected vice-pre-
sident. Miss Kahn is the past pre-

ber.
Kathryn Tillman, who was elect-
ed secretary Tuesday, is a member
of ZTA, Spurs and is an elemen-
chemistry major. O’ Reilly served
on the staff of the Flowsheet this
year.
Bob Huston, a radio and TV ma-
jor. will be the Flowsheet business
manager. He also served on the
yearbook’s staff this year.
The editors and business man-
agers are selected by the publica-
tions board. This board consists of
the present editors and business
managers of the college publications
and their faculty advisors.
The chairman of the board is
John J. Middagh, co-chairman of
the Journalism, Radio and TV De-
partment.
The convention, complete with
sirens, cowbells, catcalls and dele-
gates in red polka-dotted hats, open-
ed with a keynote speech by Fred
Johnson of Alpha Phi Omega and
was presided over by convention
chairman Rod Christian of Phi Kap-
pa Tau.
Nominees for presidential candi-
date were Wilbur Allen Stone, no-
minated by Alpha Phi Omega; Cole
Holderman, selected by Kappa Sig-
ma and Jay Madrid, canidate for
Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Holderman
secured his nomination in a run-
off with Jay Madrid.
Vice presidential nominees were
David Womack of Phi Kappa Tau,
nominated by Alpha Phi Omega
and Gary Conwell, selected by Lam-
da Chi Alpha.
Girls nominated for the secreta-
rial candidate included Lina Alex-
aner, candiate for Delta Delta Del-
ta; Karen Johnson, chosen to re-
present Chi Omega and Kit Det-
wiler, selected by Zeta Tau Alpha.
Kit was elected in a run-off with
Karen Johnson.
Nominees for treasurer were Pat
Maveety, chosen by Delta Delta Del-
ta; Liz McCutcheon, representing
Chi Omega and Judy Wolter, can-
didate for Zeta Tau Alpha.
Arts and Science delegate no-
minee were Gene Rosen of Sigma
Alpha Mu, nominated by Alpha Phi
Omega; Diane Hunter, selected by
Zeta Tau Alpha; Nicki Elms, can-
didate for Chi Omega and Charles
Warren, chosen by Kappa Sigma.

Division are urged to clear for
graduation by May 1.

take the necessary steps early in
order to avoid a last minute rush.
The procedure includes clearance
from Dean A. H. Berkman, the
Business Office and the Placement
Bureau.

Students Win Praise
For Conduct At Meet
Dr. Clyde Kelsey, Texas Western
dean of students, received a letter
recently from Howard Payne Col-
lege commending the “Troubadors”
on their .performance and behavior
at a contest held at that college.
The “Troubadors” won second
place in a contest held at Howard
Payne.
The letter praised the group of
TWC students for the “excellent
: way in which they represented
their college in behavior and atti-
tude.”
The Hard Luck dance will be
held tonight in the SUB ballroom
at 8 p. m. The dance will bring to
a close the activities surrounding
St. Patrick’s Day with the judging
of the Beard Growing contest and
the selection of an Engineer’s
Queen.
The Beard Growing contest,
which was begun on January 1,
will be judged under four categor-
ies—scrounges, neatest trim, full-
est or best growth, and best effort
with the least results. Prizes will
be awarded to the wnners.
oFur pretty coeds will vie for
the title of Engineers Queen. The
girls were chosen by the four en-
gineering societies on campus. Re-
presenting the civil engineers is
Sandy Snodgrass, the mechanical
Sheila Layne, metallurgical, San-
dra Van Brunt, and the electrical.

Prizes will also be awarded to
the man and woman wearing the
best “hard luck’ costumes. Students
attending should dress in a fash-

cers. 1962-63 Student Association by Greek delegates to the United
Susan Beehler, a member of Zeta
Tau Alpha sorority and past mem-
ber of Spurs and Alpha Lambda
Delta, was elected president of
AWS. Miss Beehler was tapped for
Chenrizig last week and is a music
education major.
Maggie Yapor, the other candi-
date for the presidency, was ap-
pointed Parliamentarian of AWS,
According to Dean Byrne, station
manager, the contest fervor con-
tinues at a peak and a new con-
test began early this week.
Students are asked to vote for
their favorite KVOF dee-jay by
sending a postcard or letter to the
station.
“The dee-jay who receives the
most votes,” Byrne said, “will then
draw a name from those submitting
cards and letters and the winner
will receive two popular LP al-
bums and have an opportunty to
appear on KVOF as a guest dee-
jay.”
