The dark ages of UT El Paso’s
athletic program may have seen
some light. Not content with being
a four sport school, the University
has embarked on a journey to bring
UT El Paso on a par with other
major schools in the nation.
A goal of one million dollars has
been set for the improvement of
the sports program. To reach this
monumental sight, the University
named Nevil Shed campaign
director of the drive.
Shed will be athletic director Jim
Bowden’s administrative assistant.

some favorite verbs are rout, crush,
whip, overwhelm, obliterate,
barbeque,etc.
Then there are descriptions of
like ripping the cords; tucked the
puck into the corner; lugged it over
from the two and circled the bases
are typical.
Let us not forget the
sportscasters. Quips ala “he passed
the defender like his feet were
nailed to the floor”; “he hung him
out to dry”; “he put his man into
the popcorn machine”; and “he got
the snowbird” are pet phrases of
the announcers.
Like the Monday morning
quarterbacks, sportscasters are great
we hear “it was a bad call.”
If it had been completed for a
touchdown the mike jockeys
mouth “great call.”
how a ball is thrown. It is a blazing
fast ball, a lollipop curve and a
bullet pass. The thrower “hits him
in the numbers”; “rifles the ball to
first”; or “blows it by the hitter.”
These comments make us aware the
hurler has a cannon arm.
Ever hear a ball called a pigskin,
pellet, round ball, grapefruit, apple,
torpedo or sphere?
Standing as we are, close to the
opening of the new World Football
League season July 10, we can
count on the continuation of the
colorful terminology of the sports
reporters.
However, instead of familiar
NFL phrases like "Eagles fly past
stampeding Colts” and "Redskins
scalp Cowboys”, we can plan on
some verbal beauties with the
WFL’s team names.
I can see the headlines now.
“(Chicago) Fire holds off
(Portland) Storm with umbrella
secondary. Fire cracks
(Philadelphia) Bell with blazing
speed. (Detroit) Wheels roll on;
hope to ring Bell Sunday.” Here are
two I well bet on seeing. “Storm
douses Fire” and “(Birmingham)
Americans eclipse (Southern Califor-
nia) Sun.”
In the past Bowden was the head of
the annual fund drive but the duties
of his job soon became more than
he could handle.
“With all of the things that came
across my desk," said Bowden, “I
needed an assistant to help me with
the campaign for contributions to
the athletic program.”
Though not a complete disaster,
Miner sports are lacking
considerably compared to other
schools in the Western Athletic
Conference. But if the fund drive is
successful, things could take a turn
for the better.
“We’re hoping that with the
money we raise,” commented
Bowden, “we’ll be able to add on
more sports to our program. This
includes women’s sports as well as
men’s.”
Though the University does not
subside on sports alone, the fact
remains that it will not prosper
without a sound athletic
department.
Bowden explains, “When we
present our product to a certain
group, we will try to sell the
University with an emphasis on
sports. Athletics are important to a
school because they act as a
showcase or an attention getter for
the institution.”
Like it or not, we will be hearing
a good deal about sports in the next
few years. The fate of UT El Paso is
in the hands of the community for
without financial support we are
doomed to remain in a state of
non-improvement.
But Jim Bowden and Nevil Shed
will be out to make sure that the
University is not left behind in its
quest for a solid reputation.
