A dismal season will come
to an end Saturday, as the
U.T.-El Paso Miners host the
Brigham Young Cougars at
the Sun Bowl.
Injuries and inexperience
in key positions have taken
their toll on the young Miner
squad, as they have suffered
through a 1-9 year. BYU
started the season slowly, but
have come on to win five of
their last six games, and enter
this week’s contest with a 5-4
record.

Waigwa still injured
Miners rely on depth
by Angelo Pokluda
It has been a prosperous season for Ted Banks and his
crosscountry team but prosperity is beginning to take its
toll.
Junior All-America Wilson Waigwa is suffering from an
extremely sore thigh muscle, which occured during the
Western Athletic Conference Championships.
It is doubtful whether Waigwa will compete in the
nationals because of the extent of the injury.
“Unless a miracle occurs he will not be able to compete,”
said Banks. He added the injury probably occured as a
result of his favoring his other groin injury from several
weeks earlier.
The crosscountry team is noted for other runners besides
Waigwa. Team depth is one of its stronger points and James
Munyala proved this with his first place finish in the WAC
championship Saturday.
Until now the harriers have looked up to Waigwa for the
first place finish.
“We do have a chance without him,” said Banks. Frank
Muhene is a returning All-America, the other five runners
have an opportunity to place in the top 25 to become
All-Americas also. Banks emphasised that “We can not be
counted out.”
Washington State, Western Kentucky, Oregon, and
Tennessee were singled out as the teams offering the most
competition. But most of these teams are questionable to
take the title.
Washington State has been having fourth and fifth man
troubles. While Western Kentucky, which was predicted to
be strong team at the onset of the season, has been beaten
several times.
There is no doubt that the foreign athlete issue will come
up again, especially if the Miners have a good race. But it is
expected.

Sophomore tailback
Robert Elliott is rapidly
closing in on the 1,000 yard
plateau for the season. He
needs 111 yards against the
Cougars to reach the mark.
Elliott is second on the
all-time U.T. El Paso rushing
list, and trails only Fred
Wendt, who accumlated
1,570 yards in 1948.
The Miner defense, which
has held strong throughout
the year, is sixth in the
Western Athletic Conference
against the rush, fourth versus
