attend the event and offer the banquet address.
Poetry winners
Eastwood High School has swept the first annual poetry
contest for high school students sponsored by the English
department and “The Texas Slough Magazine."
Charles B. Taylor, editor and publisher of “Texas Slough,"
and a member of the department of English, announced the top
five winning peoms were submitted by students at Eastwood in
creative writing classes taught by Bonnie A. Lesley.
Judges of the contest were Pat Guidry, Bart L. Stafford III
and Dr. Taylor, all associated with the U.E. El Paso English
Department.
The “Seminar in Outdoor Education," a summer course at UT
El Paso, will be offered for the third consecutive summer in the
first summer semester, registration for which will take place on
campus May 31.
The course, designated P.E. 3410, is taught by Don Hardin,
professor of health and physical education. Emphasis of the
course is directed toward the appreciation of the Southwest
outdoors. Backpacking equipment, conditioning, and techniques
are covered in detail. Also covered are fly fishing, outdoor
photography, survival techniques, map and compass reading, and
nature study.
The only prerequisite for the course, Dr. Hardin says is that
the student be in good physical condition.
Frances Hernandez
Frances Hernandez, associate proressor in the Department of
English, has been invited to present a paper to the Katherine
Anne Porter Symposium at Howard Payne University in
Brownwood May 10-11. Her study, titled “ ‘Ship of Fools' and
‘The Winners’: The South American Connection," compares
Porter’s most famous novel and one by Julio Cortazar of
Argentina called “Los premios."
Ethnic conference
The Southwest Ethnic Study Center will hold a conference
from 9a.m. to 5 p.m. next Thursday and Friday in the Library
Auditorium.
