What are responsible drinkers?
Montes defines one as a person who eats full
meals before drinking, decides on a limit of
drinks before beginning to drink, drinks slowly
and participates in other activities while
consuming alcohol.
Moreover, the education specialist cites
responsible drinkers as ones who don’t drink to
get drunk or drive after having a few drinks. To
her, too much drinking would be more than
three drinks in an hour’s time for a 150-pound
person.
To back her comments, Montes leafed
through the council’s statistics saying one
study indicates 93 percent of college students
drank in 1976, even in states where the legal
age is 21 years.
Montes says, “Alcohol has taken the place of
pills and smoking as the socially accepted drug
to use, although not all these drinkers have a
problem.”
The main hope the two education specialists
want to convey to students is that they can go
through the University Counseling Service or
may go directly to the council for help in
combating alcohol abuse.
“The main thing is we just want to make
people aware of us,” Donovan expresses. “If
someone is sick they are referred to a hospital.
If alcohol abusers will come to us to talk we
can then refer them to Alcoholics Anonymous
or other organizations for help.”
And, she stresses, “We don’t preach against
drinking. It is absolutely the drinker’s decision.
We just want to inform drinkers on what can
happen, and then we’ll hope for some response
along these lines.”

You may enjoy the night life in Juarez
enough to have a few drinks when you want a
good time. Most El Pasoans do enjoy the
convenience of the border and crossing the
bridge for alcohol.
This may be why 61 percent of El Paso’s
traffic fatalities were caused by intoxicated
drivers in 1975. And 86 percent of all traffic
arrests in El Paso that year were for driving
while intoxicated.
This is a reason why Rosemary Montes and
Beverly Donovan, education specialists for the
West Texas Council on Alcoholism, have
scheduled a presentation dealing with
alcoholism and its effects for University
students.
Sessions will begin at 7 p.m. today through
Thursday in the Kelly Hall lounge. The
education specialists note they have heard
“when one resident assistant took over she
noticed most alcohol drinkers were in the
athletes’ dorm.”
As part of their effort to reach the entire
city, the education specialists have visited
junior high and high schools, and now the
University in an attempt to familiarize persons
with the problems of drinking while driving.
In ac "ion, the presentation will involve the
effects on alcohol on the body, the problems of
alcoholism and helping persons make the
decision of whether to drink.
Some problems of alcohol abuse, Montes
notes, are the breakdown of social
relationships, persons saying things they really
don’t mean and vandalism. Also, when persons
make the decision to drink, they must be
“responsible drinkers.”
