"I didn’t like New York at all,” he pointed out.
"The style of living didn’t appeal to me and I wanted
to get out. Some friends of the family lived down
here and they invited me to live with them, so I
came.”
After arriving in El Paso, White chose to attend
Eastwood High School because of the winning
tradition at the school. During his junior and senior
years he was the top player in the city and as a senior
he averaged 22 points and 19 rebounds per game. Yet
his team never won the state championship while he
played on the varsity.

just might take it all that season.”
At 6-9 and 215 pounds, White seems to have been
born to play basketball. His quick feet, huge hands
and sound basketball instincts enable him to play
what appears to be perfect basketball, but he feels
differently.
“Offensive rebounding and scoring are the two
things 1 do best, but I still need to work on my
defense and free throws. Don Haskins’ teams are
known for defense so I think playing here will make
me a much better defensive player.”
White plans to major in business when he gets here.
When asked if he plans to play in the National
Basketball Association upon graduation, he bristled
and replied, “First I have to get through UTEP. A lot
can happen in four years. If I get drafted that's fine
but I’m sure not going to worry about it now.”
But there is more to life than basketball and
school. One must have some means of relaxing from
the pressures of being one of the top high school
basketball players in the nation.
“I like to run for exercise and go swimming, he
said. “Also 1 like to watch movies and mess around
with the guys.”
As the interview was drawing to a close, White kept
asking, “Is that it? Are we finished?” He certainly
wasn’t being rude but it was obvious that being
interviewed was not one of his favorite pastimes.
That figures, because Terry White realizes he has to
prove himself all over again, and would prefer not to
talk about himself until he has done so.
At this time next year he should be much easier to
interview.

Miners have broken five

Ask any basketball player what his goals are and a
99 percent chance exists that he’ll say his only goal is
to play on a winning team and he could not care less
about how many points he scores or the number of
rebounds he gets. It is the macho thing to say.
Coaches and teammates love to hear it.
Of course once the game starts, 99 per cent of
these players do everything but play with a pocket
calculator to keep track of personal statistics.
But somehow when Terry White says it, you get
the idea that he really means it. His easy-going
personality exudes the impression that he can only
derive satisfaction from playing an integral role on a
winning team; that he will only score points in
headline grabbing gobs if that’s what it takes for his
team to win.
On April 17. White signed to play with the Miners.
It isadate which already ranks as a red-letter date in
UT El Paso athletic history. It marked the first time
the basketball team has ever signed a bonafied high
school All-American player.
Why did White choose UTEP when several other
schools, including NCAA champion Kentucky,
wanted his services?
“I figure we can win the Western Athletic
Conference championship and maybe the NCAA
here,” he explained. “I'll also get to play a lot,
although I don’t expect to necessarily start as a
freshman because I'm not good enough yet.”
After spending his freshman year at Bishop
Loughlin High School in New York City, White “got
tired of the rat race,” and wanted to leave.

Now that he’s at UTEP he’ll have four more
chances to win championships, and unlike his senior
