A COMIC CALAMITY ATTENDS THE OVERNIGHT VISIT
OF HELEN'S BIMTKRINLAW
A vogue depression clouded Helen's

light that atreamed across the pillow
her mind groped daxedly tor the cause.
Thea in a flash the knew. Carrie!
Carrie bad stayed all night!
Longing to settle back for another
dose Helen forced beraelf out of bed.
She must see about breakfast for her
meticulous sister-in-law.
Aroused by the click of the shade as
she shut out the glaring light Warren
yawned and grunted.
“xfear. you needn't get up Just yet
I have to see about breaklast. She
doesn't know Carrie’s here."
Slippering out to the kitchen. Helen
found only Pusey Purr-Mew robbing
expectantly against the leg of the table.
"Cura! Cora!" Helen knocked at the
maid's roonh "Aren’t you up yet?"
The door opened a few inches ex-
posing the girl's sleep-swollen face.
"You’ll have to burry Cora. Mrs.
Edwards stayed all night. Make some
muffins —just as you do Sundays. We'll
want eggs and bacon—have the bpcon
nice and crisp. Cut on one of the best
tablecloth^—ahd the good napkins."
Cora never gracious about unexpect-
ed guests muttered a surly "Yes'm” as
she slammed the door to finish a hasty
toilet •
Hurrying to the bathroom Helen laid
out two monogramed guest towels and
a cake of scented soap. The gleaming
faults she viewed with satisfaction
glad that yesterday had been the day
for cleaning the nickel and silver.
“Now dear you’d better get up."

sleep. “1 wsnt you to be out of the

“Won't hurt her to wait.” yawned
Warren. scratching hia ■ toweled bead.
“Get out that light gray suit will you?"
"Oh I've so much to do. Can't you
wait on yourself thia morning?"
“What in biases you got to do?
Cora's here to get breakfast isn’t she?"
Diving into bis closet. Helen laid out
the light gray suit put bis cuff but-
tons into a fresh shirt then.rushed out
to the dining-room to lower the awn-
ings so it would be restfully dim and
cool for breakfast. .
Who could be calling so early? Won-
derlnxly she answered the telephone.
"Oh hello. Lawrence! Yes.
she's going to the dentist right after
breakfast. I think her appointment's
for 11:30 Yes I'll tell her.”
“Was that Lawrence?” called Car-
rie querulously a* Helen came from the
phone. “Why didn't you tell me? J
wanted to sneak to him.
“I thought you were asleep tie's
goin^ to meet you at the dentist. If
you feel badly—he'll go out home with
yon on the 12:10.”
“Well I don't fee! much like going
tn a dentist this morning. I had a
wretched night. How ean yon stand II
here? Those truck* and milk wagons
kept going all night. I wish now I'd
gone out bomd.”
Helen wished It too but refrained
from saying so.
“Get me some kind of a kimona
Helen. I've got to give Bobbie his
bath."
“Here’s my robe snd slippers. War-
yen'll be out in a minute.” .
Robbie's ablutions were accompanied
by howls and shrieks above which rose
Carrie's shrill reprimand*.

with Bobbie clean but mutinous.
"He's erose because he' didn't sleep.
I don't nee how any one can in the
city. Don't nrecioua. let that cat alone!
She scratched you last time."
It was another twen:r mi’int • af
euernlous complaints from Carrie be-
fne thev were finally seated around
Ihe breakfast table.
“Where’s that big dictionary?’
Bobbie elevated by the unabrdge'
Webster dived into the powdered
sugar.
“Dh. I wouldn't do that! Helen res-
cued the bowl und-r Carrie's hostile
stare. “Eat your nice cantaloupe. You
don’t want any more surer on that.”
“Isn't very sweet “ criticised Carrie
“These smooth rinds never are. Don't
you know how to select melons?" with

"Is this all the cream?" Carrie al-
