1 VALUE TO CUT
Project of Highway Into
Mexico Pushed at Meet-
ing in Valley.
MEANS MUCH LOCALLY
Movement Now Beginning
to Show Real Life and
h Will Proceed Rapidly.
Extension of the Old Rnanish Trail
Into Mexico touching Tampioo and
other Important cities will vastly add
to Man Antonio's position an a tourist
city and the influence of the trail in
building up trade with the Rio Grande
▼alley will be of inestimable value ac-
cording to officials of the trail assocla
tion who han returned to San Antonio
after meetings at Alice Tex and
through the valley.
The meetings were attended by coun-
ty judges and commissioners bankers
commercial secretaries and other prom-
inent citizens of Ilie valley. All conn
ties expressed their readiness to vote
for bonds for the trail. A major high-
way "00 miles long is pinned. paved
to carry henry traffic. It is believed
that the federal government will aid
in the upkeep of the highway and that
the Mexican government will carry it
through from Matamoras to the City of
Mexico.
"The valley represents the greatest
trade territory of the future for Man
Antonio and a paved highway in these
days of automobile and truck travel
is of more value in reaching such a
territory than a railwc/" I>r. Fred B.
Johnson president of the trail associa
tion declared upon his return.
Add to Tourist Reputation.
“Ao a tourist artery thia extension
of the Old Mpanish Trail into Mexico
will greatly advance Snn Antonio and
Routh Texas as a tourist center. More-
over. we are working out consistently
the background of old history as well
as constructing one of the world's great-
est trunk lines.”
Mimbera of the party which went
from Man Antonio to the Routh Texas
towns declared that the trail has trans-
formed in two years time Routh Texas
from a land of indefinite roads into
oue of organised trunk lines which arc
well financed. Its trunk through Kerr-
villa Fort Ntockton dnd the Davis
mountains clears up the territory to
KJ Paso. Its trunk to Del Kio is
ma.>ed and au organised movement to
get this whole spur under construction
is under way it was said. The trunk
to Honstou and East Texas was said
to be approaching completion rapidlr
and traffic is alreadv making it nece«-
aary to conaider paving the fine gravel
roads.
"The movement to build a trunk to
Brownsville is only beginning and as
fast as we get support we shall carry
the Old Spanish Trail Into other ter-
ritory” said 11. 15. Ayres managing
director.
Sure of Half Already
“Th* Brownsville extension is the re-
eult of months of study nnd the usual
loot scouting trips to find the right
route said Mr. Ayres. “We are al-
ready sure of over half of this route
o'ine paved and the other counties
promise to vote for paving. The right-
