Claim for $5OOO Reimburse-

on Medina Delivery.
WAR CONTRACTS LOST
Impossible to Even Clear
Expenses After Sudden
Rise in Prices.
Should the government's plan of re-
imbursing rural route mail carriers who
actuaby lost money during the fulfill-
ment of war-time contracts become
actual. James Amberson Medina-Ban-
dera carrier would be entitled to ap-
proximately JSOOU according to bis
claim.
Legislation now pends in congress
which would reimburse the mail deliver-
er for loss through high prices during
the war period.
The Bandera route was let in I‘Jltt
Miler contract of $2317 salary per an-
num. and the Medina delivery for $l5O
or a total of $.'1007 a year. Figures
would show that curing the carrier's
four years under the contract he would
have made $12208. The contract ex-
pitea in two months. Instead he claims
actual operating expenses have totaled
sluoUo dollars due to unprecedented
Conditions.
By carrying passengers the claim
States a greater loss was averted. Mr.
Amberson declared new- bids for the
Mime route would soon be offered the
governmaat. - but that a much higher
figure would be named in order to pre-
vent a ret urrenee of loss.
Bix Reasons for Loss.
In Texas there are said to be ap-
proximately 31)0 rural mail carriers wpo
lost on delivery under war-time con-
t acts. It is believed their claims if
viewed in a favorable light would like-
wise entitle them to rccompcnsalion
from tin- government.
Setting forth six of his own reasons
for inability to clear expenses while de-
livering mail during late periods of
“bard times." the following are believed
to correspond with those of carriers in
other parts of the state who may bene-
fit by congtesaional legislation:
Overloading of truck by extra mail
not expected or specified pre venting the
carrying of passengers at times; war
prices on gasoline oils tires and auto-
mobile repairs; heavy rains during 11)111
and consequent bad mails; delivery of
If government grocery sales through par-
' cel post adding many extra pounds
daily to load; continuation of high
w price* after sod of war and toll fees
on Medina route.
Bo heavy were deliveries of govern-
ment groceries Mr. Amberson said that
be became thoroughly convinced that
people on the Bandera Medina and
Tarpley routes were the only ones
using these fowls.
Many days ho said mail averaged
JOUl) pound- making pasaengrr-carrymt
an imimxsibility. I-ong detours were
necessary when creeks swelled or roads
were Impa-sable following rains. Mules
were often brought into play to pull
the truck from mud boles.
Texan Champions It.
The soar to unprecedented heights of
prices began be said within six months
after accepting the route at a very con-
servative figure. Gasdline was 25 per
cent higher and costs of every improve-
ment upon the truck doubled trebled
or rose manifold within a short lime.
The carrier in his claim could not
understand why toll fees should be paid
upon a government car yet such was
the case and still is it being paid bl
the deliverer himself. Thia totaled an-
nually <lO4.
However with prices gradually de-
clining and a return to normalcy be-
ing at last sighted he believes dhe car-
rying of rural mail will prove both more
pleasant and profitable. “Surely more
profitable." he emphasised.
Representative Hudspeth of Texas
and Representative Albert Johnson of
Washington are instigators of the bill
in congress to give relief to carriers
who worked under such conditions.
When completely drawn it will be pre-
sented to Postmaster Will Hayes for
his endorsement. All claims under its
provisions would of course go through
a thorough channel of investigation.

The New Laws
on teeth cleaning—five of them
Dental science has adopted new
laws on teeth cleaning. They
mean whiter cleaner safer teeth
to those who follow them.
Millions employ these new
methods largely by dental ad-
vice. Now this ten-day test is
offered to show every home the
results.
I—Fight the film
The first law is to fight film—-
that viscous coat you feet It
dims the teeth and causes most
tooth troubles.
Film clings to teeth enters
crevices and stays. Old ways of
brushing do not end it. So few
have escaped some form of film
attack.
Film absorbs stains making
the teeth look dingy. It is the
basis of tartap. ft holds food
substance which ferments and

ready has been cleared and this will be
used for staging goat roping contests
and football games.
Complete Cattle Show.
A large force of workmen was en-
-raged all of last week erecting tents to
house the livestock rihibits. There
nil) be a splendid exhibit of beef and
dairy cattle as well as of hogs and
sheep. Entries in the first named class
include selections from the herd of Noyes
Evans and J. Z. George as well as the
Montgomery herd. Mr. Evans is said
to have the largest herd of Herefords
in the state having recently acquire
the Zachary herd formerly owned by
the Taft tanch. It is also gsMctM
that collections from the herds of
W. H. Browne and N. R. King will be
exhibited. In the Jersey class ani-
mals will be shown from the St. Cloud
farm owned by Marshall Terrell the
Scnehine ranch owned by J. S. Maver-
ick and from the herds of Richard
Eckhardt and John Ledbetter. The
Boys' Jersey Calf Club of Beiar coun-
ty organised and promoted by the home
demonstration agent will have a num
tier of animals in the Jersey class. The
heifers they will show were nur-
cluisrd in June. Hv2O. from John Led-
better. Several Holstein entries also
have hern promised.
Ample entertainment for fnir visitors
is .being planned by the committee in
charge of these arrangements. The en-
tertainment features will start Thurs-
day afternoon with horse racing aud
goat roping contests which will form
n part of the program every afternoon.
The priie to be given in the goat roping
contests is a handsome saddle manu-
factured by Ren Varga. This ia the
same saddle that attracted so much at-
tention at he Cattlemen's Convention
held here last spring. The prue will
forms acid. It holds the acid in
contact with the teeth to cause
decay.
Millions of germs breed in it.
They with tartar are the chief
cause of pyorrhea.
Two method* now
Two ways are now known to
fight film. Able authorities have
proved their efficiency. Leading
dentists everywhere now advise
their daily use.
Both are embodied in Pepso-
dent — a scientific tooth paste.
They keep the teeth uniquely
clean and also highly polished.
Three other law*
Modem starchy diet also calls
for other helps to Nature. So
every use of Pepsodent brings
these three desired results.
