REALIZING ON STOCK
EXCHANGE DOES NOT
DIMINISH ACTIVITY
Strength in Rails and Steels
• Offsets Profit-taking
Elsewhere.
By STUART P. WEST.
New York April B.—The stock mar-
ket today a<ain encountered heavy real-
izing aalca. which gave it at times an
irregular appear Mice But there was
no suggeatiou that the force of the up-
ward movement was abating. New
high records for the year were made in
railway stocks and independent steels;
in the former because of expectation
of favorable traffic statements for
March and the still more attractive in-
vestment return offered at current
1 prices and in the latter because of more
*2 v/re advances at the steel centers. The
JT ” Strength of these two groups more than
r offset the effect of profit-taking else-
where.
Many new highs were reached in the
railway bond list and it was another
day of undiminished activity in this
market. The only influence traceable
to the government crop report appeared
in the shares of the southwestern rails
the strength which was at least partly
attributed to the removal of all doubt
regarding a possible wheat shortage.
The wheat market itself had been so
well prepared by private estimates for
the government figures that it was not
much affected.
For the first time since the third
week in March sterling got above the
84.40 level. It was still 4 cents in
the pound under the high record of
March 1.

Czech iMue la a Feature.
New York April B.—Heavy trading
in the new Czecbslovakia 8 per cent se-
cured external .inking fund bond at
another -advance of a point was the
mot interesting feature of today' bond
market. These bonds were up 2 1-2
points above their issue price Thursday.
Their popularity was at once apparent
when the 114000.000 portion of a $50.-
000.000 loan was quickly subscribed and
a substantial premium was offered when
trading began.
With sterling exchange arrow the
$4.40 level this morning all the United
Kingdom 5 1-2 per cent external loans
reached new highs. So did the Den-
mark 6s and the Department of the
Seine 7s. The rest of the foreign
group were in demand around their top
prices. Liberty bonds kept strong
and soon after the opening the second
4 1-4 per cent loan got to their high-
est. above 99.40.
The strength in the Greater New
York Traction issues was sustained
with new high prices for the Brooklyn
Rapid Transit 7s and Ss. and fractional
gains in most of the other traction is-
sues. The continued rise in the Brook-
lyn Rapid Transit securities was due to
the good earning statements issued yes-
terday.
Chicago. Burlington & Quincy joint
6 l-2» advanced a point and Ann Ar-
bor first 4s were strong. The major-
ity of industrial bonds were firm.
The successful sale this week of the
$.3000000 Province of Alberta 5 1-2
per cent gold bonds due in 11152 Lad
a stimulating effect upon the New York
market for Canadian provincial bonds.
Manitoba 6s of 1946 were quoted nt
105 1-2 bid offered at 106 1-4: the
Gs of 1928 were 100 1-2 bid. offered at

Mach Uncertainty Attached
to Sitaation in May
Contracts.
New York April R.—The uncertainty
of the situation in May contracts while
mote or less a temporary matter is
esercising an unsettling influence on the
cotton market. It is bclimi.% jbat a
very large interest 'is outstanding in
May and during the last two or three
days some of the larger air* more ini-
iwtunt holders of May contracts have
been selling the near month and buy-
ing July presumably to undo stradiles.
This has led to scattering liquidation
of Mar long accounts and the uneer-
tunty is whether the May long interest
is going to aabndon its position or
whether after reducing its tines to rea-
sonable proporitions and kiting the
price down to levels which wdl disc-ur-
ago shipments here it will demand de-
liveries on the balance of their contract.
The opening was barely’ s.eady at n

The selling was more or less ^’ricled by

Th® completion of the market changed
entirely on receipt of private reports from
Texas telling of very heavy rains at
many points in northern and western
sections and of a cloudburst at one point.
Th® tone became very strong on general
buying for both accounts. Shorts covered
in a large nay. and outside buying was
heavy Prices bulged to 1«.78 for May and
16.57 'for October at which levels th®
market stood st net gains of fourteen to
eighteen points. The clone was t**’™

WHEAT CLOSES AT
AN ADVANCE AFTER
A LOWER OPENING
Corn Oats and Provisions
Also End Higher for
the Day.
Chicago April B.—What exhibited
considerable strength in line with trade
traditions. The start was lower but
the market rallied a few minutes later
after commission houses had absorbed
the wheat on resting orders. There
was considerable May wheat sold at
$1.42 but not enough to permanently
halt demand. Locals also sold on the
bulges but commission bouse buying
was broader and this forced locals to
cover which added to the strength of
the situation. Milling demand is bet-
ter. Sales of 100.000 bushels to go
to store were reported. Export de-
mand is slow. World’s shipments
Monday will be more than 1.000.000
bushels larger than the previous week.
Market closed 5-8 to 1 3-8 cents higher.
Corn was affected by the trend of
wheat. There was a broader commis-
sion house demand in evidence. Cash
basis was unchanged. Shipping demand
was exceedingly light and the sea-
board was silent as to export business.
Receipts are falling off. Shipping sales
wore 30.000 bushels. Market closed
3-8 to 5-8 cent up.
Oats were affected by the strength in
other grains and the unfavorable out-
look for seeding. Switching operations
constituted the bulk of business. Ship-
ping demand was slow. Shipping sale*
were 22.000 bushels. Market closed
1-8 to 3-8 cent higher.
Provisions were strong. Cash house*
and parking interests bought. Pork
closed 50 cents up; lard. 7% to 10
cents higher; ribs. 25 to 30 cents
higher.
