Lifesaving screenings coming to local counties
The YWCA of Metropolitan
Dallas will soon begin provid-
ing breast and cervical cancer
screenings and health educa-
tion to women residing in
Collin, Denton and Grayson
counties.
The YWCA’s ENCOREplus
program has been awarded a
grant from the Collin County
Regional Affiliate of the Susan
G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation. The grant will
enable the program to take
mobile-screening units to
those counties and provide
women’s health education
there as well.
Previously, women in those
counties who qualified for the
program traveled to screening
sites in Dallas County.
“Our program focuses on
the early detection for breast
cancer and cervical cancer
and education about women’s
health issues,” said Jessica
Hickey, Director of Women’s
Health Services for the
YWCA. ‘We want to target
medically-undeserved women
who live in Collin, Denton and
Grayson counties.”
Last year, ENCOREplus
served approximately 40
women from Denton, Collin
and Grayson counties. The
new grant will enable the pro-
gram to serves approximately
200 by taking the services
closer to the women’s homes.
ENCOREplus is available to
women 35-years-old and over
who have no insurance, or
whose insurance doesn’t
cover mammograms, do not
qualify for Medicare or
Medicaid, have no current
symptoms of breast or cervi-
cal cancer, and meet certain
income guidelines.
