teacher said. "(Exercise) is
like a habit. Once you get into
the habit, it doesn’t seem like
any trouble.”
Shaw added she has seen
the benefits of exercise close-
up. Her brother, who was
diagnosed with heart trou-
bles, was ordered by a doctor
to engage in a daily exercise
program. Her brother is pro-
gressing nicely, she said.
While some begin an exer-
cise program based on med-
ical advice, Shaw’s healthy
habit was easy for her to form,
primarily because she enjoys
being active.
“Off and on all my life, I’ve
always been active,” she said,
ketball. “I took Jazzercise
classes when they were popu-
lar and joined Lady of America
when it opened. I’ve done a lot
of different things over the
years. Sometimes I get dis-
tracted and stop for a while,
but I always start up again.”
While a love for physical
activity motivates Shaw every
day, an interest in remaining
active inspired her to begin
her current exercise sched-
ule. She began her regime last
year, soon after she retired
from her teaching career.
Prior to retirement, she
served as a fourth-grade
teacher at Carney Elementary
School for 20 years.
“I decided I wanted my
body to be good and strong,”
she said. “I want to be able to
Physical activity is part of my
nature; I think it’s a mental
attitude.”
Shaw feels she.has indeed
progressed and become
stronger in the past year. And
aside from the rewards of
‘strength, stamina and
endurance, daily exercise has
enabled Shaw to meet new
people.
“I have great fun," she said
with a smile.
Her regime also has helped
fill her days. After retiring,
Shaw was uncertain as to how
she would spend her time.
Exercise has helped her fill
that void.
"When I retired, I went into
this gung ho,” she said. “It
keeps me from being bored
and wondering what I’m going
to do every day. It fills the
time like teaching did; I loved
teaching.”
Shaw stressed she is not a
health fanatic. That’s why she
believes exercise is for every-
one of every age. And she
feels she is living proof of that
sentiment.
“I hope I can be an inspira-
tion for someone,” she said.

From a newspaper stand-
point, I love elections. It’s not
just that there’s pretty much
always something to write about
or usually makes my job a little
more interesting. It’s the fact
that people start getting
involved — speaking out, cam-
paigning for someone they
believe in. I could do without
those who campaign against
someone they dislike, but when
the Letters to the Editor start
rolling in, I get goose bumps.
OK, call me naive, but that’s
when I feel the Power of the
Press being really used to its
fullest. We get to dust off the
Opinion Page and really get to
use it the way it was always
meant to be.
Well, that is, if we have an
election.
I know there are a few out
there who are just biding their
time and will decide to file at the
last possible minute. Just
remember the deadline is 5 p.m.
on Wednesday, March 21 and
the election is May 5.

ADULT SUBJECT
Increasing number of adults are choosing to undergo orthodon-
tic treatment as evidenced by the fact that up to one-quarter of all
orthodontic treatment today is performed on adult patients. This
is done with the realization that straighter teeth create more
attractive smiles and greater confidence and straight teeth are eas-
ier to clean. This helps to prevent both gum disease and tooth
loss. Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age. The primary
difference between adult patients and their more youthful coun-
terparts is that an adult’s treatment will usually take longer.
Because adults bone structure is more firmly set than that of a
ten- or twelve year old, adult treatment can.usually be expected
to take 10% to 20% longer.
It is unwise to leave the problems of children or adults untreat-
ed. They may become worse in time. Severe orthodontics prob-
lems can lead to loss of teeth, discomfort-and anxieties over one’s
appearance. For more information, or to schedule a consultation,
