Caution urged in hiring of
house-cleaning contractors
Early to rise, early to shop
BY A. LEE GRAHAM
STAFF WRITER
Complaints from The Colony
residents have led the Better
Business Bureau to deem one
Richardson air duct and carpet-
cleaning business "unsatisfacto-
ry."
“This is the season that peo-
ple clean their homes for holiday
gatherings, so it’s important that
they are aware of some compa-
nies that might be questionable,”
said Jeannette Kopko of the
Better Business Bureau in
Dallas.
In the last three years,
Richardson-based CMT Air Duct
and Carpet Cleaning, has gener-
ated 62 complaints from
Metroplex customers, forwarded
to the bureau’s Dallas office.
Three years constitutes a regular
“reporting period,” according to
bureau practice.
“CMT has a pattern of com-
plaints alleging misrepresenting
price and high-pressure sales
claiming there’s mold without
adequate testing,” said Kopko.
When contacted for this arti-
cle, a CMT official answered all
questions. But the individual sub-
sequently requested all answers
be stricken from the record,
claiming the interview was not
“real” and that the reporter did

not explain his comments were
intended for publication.
Yet the reporter identified
himself as such from the begin-
ning and said he was pursuing a
story involving the company’s
record with the Better Business
Bureau.
Repeated requests to publish
the company’s response for bal-
anced coverage were declined.
CMT is based on Arapaho
Road, but complaints sent to the
bureau have come from such dis-
parate locations as Mesquite,
Dallas, The Colony, Irving, Allen,
Plano and Richardson, according
to the bureau.
Most claims make similar alle-
gations - that CMT misrepresent-
ed prices, made claims about
“dangerous” mold without sup-
portive evidence and performed
unsatisfactory work.
Shannon Wise insists those
claims are true. The Plano
woman said she contacted the
company in July 2002.
“I saw their name of a flier
and wanted my air ducts cleaned
before my baby was born.”
Thinking the job would cost
no more than $120, the expectant
mother said she contacted the
firm. She said workers inspected
her house and found black mold,
which she said would boost the
price to almost $1,000.
“I told them I’d need to talk
with my husband before making
a decision, but they tried to pres-
sure me into making a decision
right there.”
Wise said that the advertised
price was misleading, as she said
the flier promised $5 per duct
with free carpet cleaning. A sub-
sequent home inspection by an
insurance adjuster and air-duct
specialist found the ducts

“squeaky clean,” according to
Wise. She said no mold - black or
otherwise - was found.
Wise lodged a complaint with
the bureau and decided against
hiring CMT. She advises other
homeowners to be vigilant when
hiring businesses.
Aside from customer com-
plaints, the bureau has its own
beef. That would be CMT’s use of
the bureau’s torch logo without
its permission.
“They had been using the BBB
logo on invoices, in advertising
and on its Web site,” said Kopko.
“They were doing this despite the
fact that they weren’t a (bureau)
member.”
The company said it would
cease using the logo in October,
according to the bureau.
