FROM STAFF REPORTS
Four community parks in The Colony got a
facelift on Saturday courtesy of a group of
young people from The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints, who spent the day shovel-
ing 220 cubic yards of wood fiber to improve
safety on park playgrounds.
More than 150 youth, ages 14 to 18, volun-
teered their time and made improvements to
Friendship Park, Slay/Baker Park, Kid’s Colony
Park, and Ridgepointe Park. The service project
was part of an annual weekend gathering of LDS
Church youth from The Colony, Little Elm,
Frisco, Carrollton, and Farmer’s Branch.
A new layer of wood fiber was added on
playground areas of the parks in order to create
a softer landing surface for the children who
play there. Buck Buchheister, parks manger for
The Colony Parks and Recreation Department,
said the service project was a big help to the
city. . J
“It saved us probably a good working week
(of staff time), and it got the job done a lot soon-
er than it would have been, otherwise,”
SUBMITTED PHOTOS Buchheister said.
Above, Mark Roberts, 18; Michelle It was the youth themselves who came up
Harris, 16; and Anne Jackson, 17, with the idea of performing a service for the
shovel wood fiber at Ridgepointe Park city. Adult leaders had initially suggested the

hard,” she said. “It’s tough work, but there’s
been a lot of laughing and joking around out
here. Everybody's got a good attitude.”
Seeing that positive attitude in action was
touching for Milt Colegrove, bishop of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in
The Colony.
“Think of the dozens of other options these
kids had today, and instead of kicking back, they
chose to spend five hours working under the hot
sun,” Bishop Colegrove said. “This type of ser-
vice has become the norm for these kids. I think
what we’re building here is our future leaders.
These young men and women will never be
afraid to get their hands dirty, when the need
arises, and they will always care about their
communities.”
