Sheriffs Office staff
wins dispatch award
FROM STAFF REPORTS
Olive Stephens is affectionate-
ly known as “Grandmother of 9-1-
1 Service” in Denton County.
An original and current mem-
ber of the Denco Area 9-1-1
District board of managers,
Stephens has served the resi-
dents of Denton County with dis-
tinction for 20 years. In all those
years, the 90-year-old dynamo
has never missed a scheduled
board meeting.
She will be honored at
Denco’s 20th anniversary celebra-
tion from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 14 at
the district offices in Lewisville.
Stephens served on the origi-
nal 9-1-1 Task Force which
planned for the creation of the
District, allowing Denton County
residents to have local control of
policy and funding. Stephens
remembers personally addressing
and mailing thousands of post-
cards urging residents to vote in
favor a resolution creating the 9-
1-1 District. Residents responded,
with 82 percent of votes cast in
favor of the resolution.
Also honored at the event will
be winners and nominees of the
State of Texas Telecommuni-
cators Awards. Sgt. Robin
Thomas of the Denton County
Sheriff’s Office will be named
Telecommunicator of the Year at
a statewide ceremony later this
month.
Thomas and her co-workers
Jennifer Mayo, Sherry Pike, and
Rebecca Broussard were instru-
mental in getting help to a 14-
year-old victim of a sexual
assault. The victim secretly used
a cell phone to reach 9-1-1, but
could not give her location. Using
language interpretation service,
9-1-1 wireless phone technology,
digital mapping and strong inves-
tigative skills, the telecommuni-
cators found the caller and the
authorities were able to make the
arrest.
