Star Local Media:
What is Paris, Tenn., like? Is there an art
scene there?
Preston Bradley: It’s a pretty rural agri-
culture community. There’s a pretty small art
community, but it’s more on the crafts side.
There is a college that has a great art pro-
gram there which is where I got my start,
Murray State University.
whatever I’m doing.
SLM: Your work reminds me a little of
Luba Lukova and Jean Basquiat. What are
some of your influences?
PB: I think I began looking at a lot of folk
artists and untrained artists. I’ve always en-
joyed that balance of untrained and trained. I
was more interested in expression and direct-
ness than technique. I think one of the main
artists that I’m looking at now is Warrington
Colescott. I also look at a lot of illustrators
and painters.

SLM: What got you into art? Can you
pinpoint the moment?
PB: I’ve always drawn. I did some art in
high school that I really enjoyed. It wasn’t
until college that I thought it could be a dis-
cipline. I took an art appreciation class, and
that’s what made me view it in a different
way.
SLM: It seems like a lot of your art
comes from your experiences. How true is
that?
PB: Yea, I think a lot of it comes from my
experiences. I’ve worked a lot of different
jobs, especially being an artist. At those jobs,
SLM: Your style is very distinct. What
was the journey like to discover your per-
sonal voice in your art?
PB: I think early on in academia, you’re
trained to render well and focus on the tech-
nique. At first, I was really mediocre techni-
cally. As I got into advanced drawing and was
able to do more conceptual stuff, I think I
started to loosen up. A lot of great things
came from that and a lot of professors pushed
me in that direction because it was what I
was good at.
SLM: If you could start any project of
your wildest dreams, what would it be?
PB: I think I’ve always wanted to do a wall
I meet different people and I find something bomb of different prints or to even do a
interesting about them. A lot of times, I start mural. I’ve never done a wall mural, so I’d
with a story or I extract something from a like to get some experience doing that,
memory. Sometimes it’s a trope or a stereo- whether it’s pasted onto the wall with glue or
type, but I just have fun with what I’m doing, we’re painting it.
